I want to set up icloud so all my devises are in sync, desktop, iphone and ipad. Over the last hour I think I've done more harm then good trying to follow the Apple site instructions? Can anyone walk me through the steps?

Sign into iCloud in System Preferences/iCloud using your Apple ID. Then check the various items you want to sync with iCloud. For Photos, you will need to go to Photos/Preferences/iCloud and set up the sync there. If something isn't syncing, check the application's Preferences to make sure iCloud is the default account.
Settings/Your Name/iCloud, sign in, and slide sync on for desired items.
