High Sierra - Black Screen After Logging Out of Guest Account

I have a 2014 Macbook Pro. I just recently updated the OS to High Sierra. Since updating, whenever I log out of the Guest account, the computer goes to a black screen and not the main login screen. The cursor is active and the computer makes sounds if I press keys. I searched for others with similar issues but none of the fixes I've tried have worked (resetting PRAM, deleting .AppleUpgrade, etc.). This only happens when logging out of the Guest account. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's some followup if anyone is interested. I think I may have serendipitously stumbled on to a solution for this quandary.

I recently had to use a data recovery tool because I inadvertently deleted a folder from the trash. To use the tool, I had to "prepare my system for data recovery." I have a late 2013 iMac, 21.5 inches, High Sierra 10.13.3. Apparently this preparation is required for the tool to work properly for High Sierra. Incidentally, it did not, as I could not recover the deleted folder, but that's another issue.

Since I followed the instructions for this preparation, though, the issue of black screen when logging out of Guest User is no more. When one logs out of the Guest User account, the normal login window appears. It may be nothing more than coincidence, but if anyone wants to give this a try... please have at it and let me know if it works for you.

These were the instructions for preparing the system for data recovery.

1) Restart the computer.

2) Once you hear the chime, immediately press and hold down the Command (flag on windows keyboard) and R keys at the same time.

3) Keep holding down the Command (flag) and R keys until the computer enters recovery mode. Then release the keys.

2) Click on Utilities from the drop-down box and select "Terminal."

3) Type in the command "csrutil disable" and then hit return. Restart the computer.

While I never could recover the deleted folder, since I followed these instructions the problem with a black screen upon logging out of Guest User has resolved. It may be nothing more than coincidence. Or it could be bona fide felicity. Good luck!

THIS DID IT! Now I will say that I did not try logging out of Guest account before doing this to see if it was already fixed for some reason but after running 'csrutil disable' via the steps above, I was able to log out successfully. I went back in and reenabled 'csrutil' afterwards and the Guest account still logs out successfully. Thanks so much for chiming in with this and thanks to everybody else who posted as well.

I have had this problem for several weeks. I have tried resetting the NVRAM, SMC, single user booting, and of course cruising the web for info. I tried blindly typing in the first letter of my user name (an administrator account), hitting return, and then blindly typing in my password. Nada.

I did online chatting with an Apple tech and he advised reinstalling High Sierra, which I did. So far, though, nothing has worked.

I log out of the Guest User account, and there is a black screen. The mouse cursor is there. I type and hear the keys going through. But the only way for me to get rid of the black screen is to turn my computer off, then turn it back on. While not a huge deal, it is annoying and frustrating.

One thing I did notice is that, initially when I upgraded to High Sierra, I did not have this problem. It seems that this issue began when I had the iPhoto app reinstalled. I found info on how to do this on the web. Basically, I moved everything involving iPhoto to the trash, and then I re-downloaded the latest version of the app from iTunes. As I understand it, newer iOS do not update iPhoto, but rather have replaced it with Photo, so if became inactive and unavailable. Previously my daughter used the iPhoto app for uploading and editing videos, and apparently the program she uses specifically requires the iPhoto app.

I don't know if that is germane or not, but I figured I'd throw it out there. If anyone has info on how to fix this, I'd love to hear it.

I had this problem on mid-2011 Macbook Air. Black screen whenever I logged off of Guest Account. It began with the upgrade to High Sierra.

I did the resets, OS restore, First Aid and did an internet restore per advice from Apple Support.

My problem was solved by doing a clean install using procedure I found on IMore website.

I backed up files to external drive.

I created bootable install disc on USB drive.

Erased hard drive and installed High Sierra clean to hard drive

It takes time to rebuild but there are benefits to cleaning up the Macbook Air.

The Macbook Air is performing very well.

Glad to hear it. My Guest User log out is still working as well. It definitely saves on frustration -- not needing to turn off and restart the iMac every time a person logs into the Guest User account and then logs out. I have not tried re-enabling "csrutil", though. As the iMac seems to work just fine, I'm not planning on doing so.

Maybe we'll hear from some others. It looks like dozens of persons have had the same issue. If more persons find this works for them, then we can be fairly confident this is in fact a solution, and not just a weird coincidence.
