Sugestions with data migration

Hi, I just bought a new iMac to replace my old 2011 MacBook Pro. I’m looking for the best option to migrate my most important data to my new computer without passing all the junk that old software has been installing in my old MacBook in the background.

I’m a bit hesitant about using Mac OS migrant for this reason.

Does anybody have Any suggestion to semi automate the process without having to install every software that I own manually but avoiding installing all the stuf that made my older computer extremely slow?

I was in exactly the same position as you when I recently bought a new iMac. I did not want to do a Time Machine restore, nor use Migration Assistant because it was going to drag a load of rubbish from many years of Mac ownership over!

I opted to do it manually, as it was the only way I could see to do it.

It did mean delving into the Library folder to fish out things like Stickies and Notes. Make sure you copy KeyChain details and files over.

All my apps I re-downloaded from the websites where purchased from. Some old ones I just dragged and dropped and amazingly they worked.

I "shared" my old iMac so that it showed up under devices in the finder and made it easy to drag and drop files onto my new machine.

It's still sat right next to the new iMac in case I forgot anything! When I'm absolutely sure I have all I need, I will erase and try to sell.

A little bit time consuming but I am really glad I did it this way as I didn't inherit any rubbish that's built up.
