Can no longer see printer

I installed Mountain Lion on a partition so that I could continue to use my Canon Pixma MP600R printer and scanner. This arrangement has worked fine until the other day when the printer would not connect and was showing as unavailable. Nothing had been changed that may have caused this. I have tried reinstalling the printer drivers, re-adding the printer, and even reinstalling Mountain Lion. When I try to add the printer it simply does not show as being connected. Could it be the USB lead? I cannot try connecting with another lead as the printer end of it is a square connection. Thanks.

Thanks Mike. I have tried as you suggested but the printer still does not appear for me to add it. The support page goes on to then suggest:-

Remove printer drivers

If the issue continues on your Mac after resetting the printing system, take these final steps to remove any currently installed printer drivers. These steps don't apply to AirPrint printers.

  1. From the menu bar in the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type
    /Library/Printers/
    and click Go.
  2. The Printers folder opens. Choose Edit > Select All, which selects all items in the Printers folder.
  3. Choose File > New Folder with Selection, which puts all of the selected items into a new folder named New Folder With Items.

I have tried this but at step 3 I cannot choose > New Folder with Selection, as this is greyed out?

I would make sure that you're logged in as an administrator first. I would try a different administrator account, make a new one if you have to, you can delete it later.

You might try resetting the SMC How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

and NVRAM How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Finally I would try a different usb cable.
