How can I remove an item from the Dock that appears to be "open" when there is no application for it, and I can't close it?

I have an old Onyx icon on the Dock. The program become corrupted and would not close, so I remove it with Appcleaner-3. The icon on the Dock won't close and it can't be removed in the typical way. Is there a 'brute force' way to remove an icon that appears to be open?

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.1), can't close the icon, either.

From your Finder "Go" menu > "Go to folder" and copy & paste this command:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

Press Return

Delete the plist file, then restart or log out and back in.

(This will set your Dock to default and you'll need to set it up again the way you like it.)
