Are you sure that is the exact error message? Are these messages in a green text bubble? I've never seen that error message, however text messages are a carrier function, and there is no setting on the iPhone for that. You would need to contact your carrier to ensure that you have a text message plan as part of your account. If this is something else, please provide the exact text of the error message, what app you are using if you are not using the native Messages app, and a screenshot if possible.
I have been trying to reply to text messages from my husband and daughter this morning and get a message that says “text needs to be enabled”. If I go out of the reply and send the response as if it was a new text message, it goes through. What is the problem? Nothing has changed with any of our phones or service. We text all the time. I turned Phone off and back on and could reply to husband, but then daughter sent text and same problem happened with her.

Are your husband and daughter using iPhones as well? Just to make sure, if you are using iMessage between iOS devices, check in Settings>Messages>and see if iMessage reports that it is activated, and that you have an active connection to the internet, either cellular of wi-fi.
This is the message I get. Never had any problems before today. Still same phones, service, Location etc.
Text message needs to be enabled??
