Does a PC or Mac need to be running itunes in order for the Apple TV to show local content? Another angle is asking if an iTunes library and media are on an NAS, can the Apple TV show that content?

Hi. You must be running an iTunes server on a computer to access content by Home Sharing (Computers app). Other apps, like VLC can access a network share (including NAS) directly. But they do not generally support the DRM used by providers like Apple iTunes. So the answer is: it depends on the media you need to access.

Thanks very much, and I sort of figured as much. Right now I have three NUCs all pointed at the library file and its media on a Synology box. As long as only one iTunes instance is running at a time all’s cool. Since 2006 I've been buying media through iTunes, and there’s just no way to store it all locally, even if I got around the DRM coding. The Apple TV will have to stay hypothetical. Thanks again, TW
