Apple Pay on Apple Watch series 2

I have an Apple Watch series 2 and my debit card is linked. I've tried to use Apple Pay at a corner bakery location a couple of times and it has failed me BOTH times recently. I have used Apple Pay at this location on my watch and it HAS worked before. maybe it is just my error and I'm not holding it up to the reader right. I have an iPhone 5 and I have not done the watch update yet because my phone is too old..... could that be the problem?

Hi

To use Apple Pay on your watch, quickly double-press the side button. Your default card will be displayed. If you have added other cards and wish to use one of those instead, swipe to switch between cards.

With your preferred card displayed, hold your watch up to the terminal:

The watch face should be facing and parallel with the terminal's own screen (you should not be able to see the watch face whilst paying), aligned centrally with the contactless logo on the terminal screen and held closer than 1 inch.
It should be held in that position for up to a few seconds, until you hear the confirmation beep and haptic pulse.

Be sure to also follow the other instructions here, including always selecting Credit on the terminal if offered the choice of debit or credit, even though your selected card is a debit card:
