Question

Update 11.1.1

Since I updated to 11.1.1 High Sierra on my laptop I'm not able to read my external disk anymore?

Help

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

Thanks for answering.

I will give you some more information. I cannot read it and I cannot write to it.

The external hard disk is a iOmega Ultra Max plus, which I bought around 2009, 1 terabyte / 2 drives. I store my photo's, video's and files. I use it as a back-up before I downloaded the last security version of Apples High Sierra 11.1.1, it is I believe. After that I see only the following window when I plug it into my Macbook pro:

" The disk you inserted was not readable by your computer".

This is what I see after I click initialize. I cannot go any further.

Is it possible to help me along?

Or, you cannot write to it?

As I'm not certain what you are seeing, I will just explain what happens to some external disks that were not correctly prepared for use on your Mac.

Most drives ship formatted for use on Windows, not macOS. The drive manufacturers ship a piece of software that allows your Mac to write to NTFS (Windows) file systems. That software is quite poorly written and often breaks when you update your Mac. Most often, this leaves the drive read-only. In some instances, it will prevent the drive from mounting on you Mac.

You have to either update the crappy software, or change the file system to the native HFS+ file system which will erase the drive.

Given that you say you can't read the drive, that makes things somewhat odd because I don't know how you could see the disk, but not read any files. I have seen people report drives not mounting, but mounting but not readable is odd.

If you clicked "initialize" everything is gone.

However, it appears that the drive does not work correctly any more as it is not showing any disk information.

The odds of an eight-year old drive working is slim, and there are two that make up that one.

Do you have a backup of that drive?

Also check the Disk Utility when in Recovery Mode as this well eliminated the macOS as a issue. See About macOS Recovery - Apple Support for more information.
