I am getting the below in place of photos sent and received in iMessage on my MacBook Pro. Any ideas?
I found support forum solutions from earlier MacOS versions indicating that the fix is to delete and recreate the Attachments folder within Library>Messages. In my Library>Messages, there is only 1 folder called plug-ins, and the File>New Folder option is greyed out.

Ok, I tried a new Admin user account, same problem. And, yes, the same thing is happening on my iPhone for some reason, but not as often. On my Mac (10.13.1), pics in iMessages will revert to icons upon logoff or restart; on iPhone it only happens occasionally.
I have repeated the above suggested troubleshooting multiple times. No luck. Any ideas?
Here is a visual of where the "Attachments" folder seems to be missing from. Please confirm this is where is should be?
Soooo.....
1) I did a factory ease/reinstall and the problem is solved.
2) Despite no one noticing or correcting me, I was looking for the Attachments folder in the Macintosh HD > Library > Messages folder -- the wrong folder. The proper location is in the "hidden" User Library folder: Macintosh HD > Users > [username] > Library > Messages. Since I did the restore before learning this, I guess we'll never know if that was even the problem.
New question: is there a way to permanently unhide the User Library folder in High Sierra? All the listed tricks for previous version are not working for me.

Mine was Migrated from another Mac and I had not noticed that the setting in the View Menu > Show View Option and then the Show Library option was not there.
I have not looked from a simple way but I expect now it will be a Terminal Command as Apple seem determined to Hide this folder.

(Don't use any Applications during this process and Quit all Apps)
Once Completed, Reboot the Machine with a NVRAM/PRAM Reset
Question:
What version of MacOS are you running on?
How much internal storage you have left?
Does this behavior happen on any other device?
Can you create a second user “Administrator” and test to see if this issue persist?

Spotlight is a part of Finder and Since you have missing Files/Attachments and folders in ~/Library/Messages ,Spotlight index in MacOS could have failed and possibly corrupted in a recent update. there are several other services that use Spotlight’s information, and if there is any damage to Spotlight then you might see odd problems and behaviors dotted throughout your system.
Apart from all this try signing out and back in from Messages Pref's.
I tried all of this and nothing worked. I even created a file called "Attachments" in Library>Messages and I am still losing pictures. Note: if I am sitting at the screen when a pic is sent to me, the pic will indeed be in the message. But, if my mac restarts, thats when I get the errors symbols in the pic above.
Any ideas?
Try signing out of messages on all accounts.
Move the “messages” folder from ~/Library to the desktop.
(You can always move this folder back and deleting the newly generated folder after the reboot)
reboot the machine and sign back in.
