first ipad updates not happening isnt fair.

I've always been faithful ti apple since the first iPhone came out and every time a new phone comes up I upgrade. I bought the first iPad for £700 but didn't upgrade it when new ones came out, I am not a happy bunny because there are no updates for this iPad now which I think isn't right, I think Apple should at least update older devises for a minimum of ten years. Who agrees with me/

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.0.1

likely not the users with the older devices who do get upgrades

when an upgrade is released the users of the oldests supported devices

post 100's of theads here wanting to downgrade because the requirements of the newer

versions made their ios device so slow they find it useless.

you can suggest apple your 10 year upgrade bit using their feedback channel Feedback - iPad - Apple

Uh, not likely.

Many users purchased the 1st generation iPad.

Myself included.

We all thought that this device would get years of iOS upgrades and updates, but only got one year of iOS upgrades/updates.

It got app updates for a little while longer, but those came to and end when iOS 7 was introduced.

The 2010, 1st gen iPad had hopelessly underpowered hardware.

I think it could’ve handled iOS 6, but Apple didn’t think so.

The 1st gen iPad over the years has really been considered an early adopter model.

Not fully baked device.

Something like what the first Macintosh was when it first got released in 1984.

That was an underpowered computer, as well.

It is what it is.

You’ve have had 7 years to purchase new or newer (used ) iPads with much longer longevity.

And Apple will never support iDevices for more than 5-6 years!

10 years or more is your pipedream!

You maybe able to eek out 7-8 years out of a mobile device, but support for it will end sooner!

Mobile technologies change too quickly and hardware goes obsolete in less than 10 years.

If you need a new iPad, they are better, faster and cheaper, now.

Look at the new 2017, iPad 5th generation.

It’s half the price of the original 2010 iPad, much more powerful with much larger storage capacities.

Update them how, with what? Any and all of the newer features in iOS require newer hardware. There is nothing in iOS to “update” for older, incompatible hardware. Software and operating systems are never going to change the hardware limitations of older devices. And newer software features only come about because the newer hardware makes those features possible.

Hardware and software did not develop and advance separately - they are intimately tied together.

So I’d ask again, what, exactly, do you expect an update for older hardware to actually do? Because that older hardware cannot do anything with iOS 11 at all since it does not have 64-bit processors in it.

The very concept of “fairness” has nothing to do with this. No concept of ethics or morality has anything to do with incompatible software and hardware issues.

Very true what you say about it, I can afford any of the new devices any tie but still use the first one because I only use it to draw on these days and the new phones I buy does everything else I need but consumers in all other products have to supply parts etc for 10 years so Apple should be no different. The post was just something I was thinking about at the time I bought the new iPhone X, I was thinking "how long will they support this one. No other reason than that.

But thanks for your thoughts on the post.

Sorry, in my opinion, some of the devices could easily work with the newer Ios but Apple actually stop the devices from getting them.

I do know because I am still up to date on all computers and iPads in work, as that's what I do for a living and have done for more than 35 years.

Actually, in the USA there is no federal law that specifies any required period of support at all. The often stated 10 year (or 7 year, or 5 year or 3 year) support requirment is an urban myth.

Some states have their their own laws that specify a period of support, but not all do. And of those that do, it varies quite a bit. Many simply have general laws that simply say the manufacturer must provide support for at least the duration of the warranty period.
