iPod touch (6th generation) Battery Life

I currently use an iPod touch (6th generation) almost every day and I take it to me everywhere as I don’t have a phone (Don’t ask why, I’ll get one eventually). I bought the iPod back in August of 2017. It has worked fine except for one issue, the battery life on it is really short. It seems I can only get 2-3 hours of use before the battery runs out of power. Does anyone with this device have short battery life, or is it just me?

  • It is a 32 GB iPod touch that has over 2 GBs of storage left.
  • I usually only close apps only if I am having an issue with them.
  • I did turn off apps I don’t need in the background app refresh page.
  • The games I play are 3D games, like Failey Skater and Steppy Pants, so those games could potentially eat up my battery, but I don’t play games on it much anyway. I use the internet on it moderately. Usually for researching computers and homework. I’m not on social media a lot. So I check Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter probably 3-5 times a day.
  • When I check the battery usage for the past 6 days, the top three items are Photos (It does mention background activity, so I might need to look into that. Probably because of my iCloud Photo Library, but I’m not sure. In photos, I like to look through a lot of my photos. I also do tend to take screen shots that are uploaded to my iCloud Photo Library). Safari is after that. And my home screen is third on the list.

One of the things I want to make clear. When I said I get 2-3 hours of use, I get that from the usage in the battery settings. Standby can go for over a day.

I use mine to surf the internet, check social media (I do use Snapchat but compared to others users, I don’t take many pictures.) and listen to music. I do sometimes play games on it. I bought a used iPod touch (4th generation) from someone and it also has bad battery life. That iPod touch (4th generation) is broken so it doesn’t get used anymore.

How much free data storage space is left on your iPod Touch 6?

Do you have scads and scads of apps open in the background switcher?

In Settings app, turn OFF Background App Refresh for apps that do not need this feature running.

What kind of games are you running and are you on the Internet and snapchat all the time?

To check what apps are using the most battery life, check this in Settings app under Battery and get back to us.

I don’t play any online or resource intensive games on my iPod Touch 6 and I get anywhere from 10-20, or so of battery life.

I’m getting over 10-14 hours under my normal, active use.

2 GBs of the very minimum free data storage space for any iDevice.

I would try to free up, at least, another 1 GB of free space and maybe shoot for 4 GBs and try to maintain 3-4 GBs of free data storage space.

2 GBs is barely enough room for iOS to operate within.

Any apps that constantly need to go out to the web for data are going to eat into the battery, too!

You really should be getting, at least, 6 hours or better under normal usage!

2-3 hours is just terrible battery life!

Do you keep your screen brightness down?

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons?

I’ll try to see if I can free some space. Since I am running iOS 11, and there are apps that I don’t use a lot, I could offload some of the apps I rarely use. As I did mention, I do have to check what the heck the Photos apps is doing (I did notice it pause uploading photos on battery power, but I’m not sure if it always does that). I’ll look through my background app refresh and location services settings to see if there is anything else I can turn off. I do keep the brightness as low as possible. I guess I could try a hard reset. If nothing works, I might see if Apple can check to see if there is something wrong with my battery. Being only two to three months old, it shouldn’t have any issues.
