Rosetta applications won't launch

Hi,

i have a rather weird problem with my OS X installation. When i try to launch a rosetta application (non-UB), the application doesn't launch. If I launch it from the Dock, the icon will just bounce a couple of times (1-2 seconds) and will then quit. If i launch it from anywhere else on the computer, nothing happens.

Any of you know what could cause this problem?

Rune

Rune

You can also try going to Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder) and search for a process called 'translated'. Use Activity Monitor to quit the process and then try and launch your Rosetta apps.

If you're comfortable in the Terminal you can achieve the same by using

sudo killall translated

give your password when requested.

I had this problem recently, too. I fixed it by deleting this directory:

/Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS

(This is the "Library" directory at the top level of your boot hard drive, not the one in your home directory. You'll need to provide an admin account / password. Be careful as you're working within the system directories).

Reboot your machine and empty the trash. Hopefully Rosetta applications will work now.

Hi, Ruñe et. al.

I worked on a similar problem with another fellow once: none of his PPC-based (Rosetta) apps would launch on his Intel-based Mac. The solution he found was to delete the hidden .GlobalPreferences.plist file for the affected account. To do this for your account, perform the following steps in the order specified:

1. Launch Terminal, which resides in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.

2. At the Terminal prompt, type the following command exactly as written:

cd ~/Library/Preferences

This command switches the current directory to your Home > Library > Preferences folder (~/Library/Prefernces).

3. Press Return.

4. Rename your account's .GlobalPreferences.plist file to .GlobalPreferences.plistold: at the Terminal prompt, type the following command exactly as written:

mv .GlobalPreferences.plist .GlobalPreferences.plistold

5. Press Return.

6. End your Terminal session:
6.1. At the Terminal prompt, type exit and press Return.

6.2. Quit (Command-Q) Terminal.
7. Log out of your account, then log back in to your account.

8. See if the problem is resolved.

Note the following:

• Removing the .GlobalPreferences.plist file as described above will result in some of the following preferences being reset for your account, which you can reset with System Preferences:
• Date and Time formats.
• Appearance preferences.
• International preferences.
• Keyboard & Mouse preferences.
• Some third-party applications may hide registration information in this file, so you may be prompted to re-register some applications.

• You can undo the change by repeating steps 1-8 above, but in step 4 using the command:

mv .GlobalPreferences.plistold .GlobalPreferences.plist

Good luck!

I suspect the former, i.e. Mac OS X corruption.

Repair Disk repairs the disk directory. However, it can't repair files that may have been damaged while the directory was corrupted: only a reinstall can do that.

I suspect the only way you are going to resolve this is by performing an Archive and Install. For important tips on this, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.

Good luck!

Hi Rune,

Just a wild guess . . . the same thing happened to me. Do you have any sharewares from Unsanity.com loaded? I found when I had Application Enhancer 2.02 installed - I started to get funny things like that happening.

Deinstalling APE didn't solve the problem. But deleting it from my HD did! Never happened to me since I deleted that hack!

I duplicated these results twice, too!

Good luck,
Larry

I've found a solution. Here's what I did:

Took the plunge and reinstalled the system. chose the option of not erasing the hard drive but created a Previous System fold.

Restarted and everything is working. Office, Appleworks, Adobe Professional, Quicken 2003.

Relief. Still don't know what the problem was. Running 10.4.6. Not sure if I"m game to install the updater to 10.4.8 just in case it was the problem.

Good morning and thanks for your insight!

I ran the disk utility from the startup disk and it made repairs to the startup disk! After this, the problem still appears; when I launch some applications "nothing happens". A dialog box does not appear prompting to retry or posts an error.

It seems as part of the os was corrupted or a system preference file (os9) needs to be deleted.

Even if I reinstall these applications they don’t launch.

Hi, Ken.

1. Your exact problem isn't Rosetta-related since you have a PowerPC-based Mac. Rosetta only applies to Intel-based Macs running non-Universal, i.e. PowerPC-based apps.

2. However, for your problem see my "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch" FAQ for advice on troubleshooting this issue.

3. You wrote:
"iDisk Utility finds problems with the startup drive but will not allow me to “repair disk”"
I think you meant to write Disk Utility. You can't repair your startup disk while your Mac is started up from such. Run at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.

Good luck!

After a power outage yesterday it seems that I now have this issue. It seems primarily to have affected the applications that were running at that time, of course some others as well. I don't know what Rosetta applications are but affected are itunes, safari, dashboard, iphoto etc...
Firefox & Explorer are OK!

- I've removed & deleted the ape-ware installation (no luck).
- Downloaded & reinstalled iTunes (no luck)
- I can’t find the library file to delete.
- Activity Monitor won’t launch
- iDisk Utility finds problems with the startup drive but will not allow me to “repair disk”
* Next, I plan on reinstalling the OS.

Open to any other ideas!

Thanks,
Ken
