Macbook pro 2017 bootcamp windows 10 freezes when connecting Apple USB C AV digital adapter

In the boot camp utility in macOS once you run it there is an option in the menu at the top to download windows support software to a folder. Do that and put the folder on a USB stick or something and put it in windows and run setup in the folder.

Based on the diagnostic tests so far, you have a driver issue. Create a Windows System Restore point, and download and install drivers from http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/bootcamp and test. You may also want to try the drivers from bootcampdrivers.com .

I used these settings to solve a similar issue.. disable usb settings from power options > change plan settings > change advanced power settings > on usb settings tab disable from the drop down.

I fixed it by disabling "USB selective suspend" in the power options in control panel

As a test, do not connect any USB devices, and just connect the HDMI right after Windows boots. If the screen turns on/off, the issue is related to HDMI clock syncs between the Windows and the monitor. The timeout just indicates that the sync is failing during the initial connection. I also suggest you try a different HDMI cable, preferably with Ferrite filters at each end of the cable.

Microsoft support had me do a "reset your PC" and it has resolved it, although now I have to reinstall everything...

Run Apple Software Update, but do not apply any updates, unless you first have a Windows System Restore point that you can roll back to.

As a test, can you use a VM engine trial to import the Windows installation as a VM and test connecting to the same monitor?

If you see issues in the VM test, then take your monitor and Mac to the closest Apple store and show the Genius the behavior you see. You do not seem to have a hardware issue.

Check the Device Manager before and after you connect the Digital AV adapter. You should get an HDMI, a USBc and USB2/3 device.

What is the GPU and GPU driver version on your specific Mac?

You can use a VMware Fusion trial, download and install it, and import the BC/Windows installation as a VM and then test connecting the monitor via HDMI to the VM.

The question is before 'what'? Do you have Windows Automatic Updates enabled? Did you recently apply any Apple Software Updates - Graphics?

I recommend these tests. Remove/re-install Windows for each.

• BC/Windows drivers without any Graphics updates from Apple.
• BC/Windows drivers with GPU updates.
• AMD version of BC drivers.
• Bootcamp drivers version of drivers.

I have the same or similar issues, here are some additional observations:

- Mac OSX all works fine

- Booting the Macbook in Windows with the HDMI adapter connected freezes and then reboots the system after a while.

- Rebooting the Macbook in MacOS after the "crash" reports a "machine check" exception and offers to send diagnostic info to Apple (I have done so a couple of times)

- Inserting the adapter AFTER Windows has booted recognizes the adapter and if I insert the HDMI cable then it works fine.

I am using Windows 10 Pro, Version 1803 (spring 2018 edition, build 17134.48)

I can live with the work-around that I found, but it stays annoying.
