Macbook pro 2017 bootcamp windows 10 freezes when connecting Apple USB C AV digital adapter

Hello community,

I have a Macbook pro 15 2017.

From the start I have been using Mac OS and Windows interchangeably.

One day I connected the Apple USB C adapter and windows froze. I checked if the same problem is in MacOS and it does not seem to appear.

Other usb c adapters work the same.

I work around I found was starting up windows letting it run for a bit then connecting the usb adapter.

The laptop sees all the usb devices connected to the usb c adapter but does not see the hdmi which is a problem. It then turns the screen connected on and off and eventually gets a stable connection.

What would I do in this case? Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for windows?

There are other known issues with USBc and 2.4G devices (BT uses 2.4G).

The new Apple model is to add EFI Updates as part of the macOS updates. In the macOS logs, you can see what was updated. Look at About This Mac -> Software -> Installations and also Logs. I suggest checking these logs for any obvious updates. Rolling back such updates is quite painful.

This W10 'forced updates' model is fraught with hidden pitfalls.

I've finished reinstalling all my core software and drivers, and did a windows update and apple software update and installed everything. Problem is still gone. No idea how this happened in the first place. I still think something got broken by a mac update, but for some reason the Windows reset fixed the issue.

Perhaps the firmware update made some core change to how one of the system devices works, and MacOS can perhaps auto detect this and compensate, but Windows doesn't make the appropriate changes and it becomes incompatible, but if reset, it works again because it detects the way the device is now, not the way it originally was.

As I said, go into the Boot Camp Utility in MacOS, the one that has the wizard and the only thing that the wizard allows you to do is delete everything. Ignore the wizard but leave it running, go to the menu at the top of the screen and you will see the option.

You don't get the correct menu at the top of the screen unless the boot camp utility is running. The menu at the top of the screen changes depending on what is running. It is like the menu in the top of a window in windows, but instead it is fixed at the top of the screen, detached from the floating window itself.

Be aware that the log can a significant size. Take a look at it first, before you decide to post parts of what you consider interesting. The other option is to post the two logs using DropBox or similar, but such logs can have significant personal information and it is not advisable to post such on public websites, for your own safety.

Micrsooft had me revert back to the 1703 update for Windows, I had upgraded early last week to 1709. My system is now back to where it was before all of these problems started, on the Windows end. However the problems are still there.

A MacOS update must have mucked something up in the firmware. I suspect even if I blew away Windows and reinstalled from scratch the same issue would come back.
