Macbook pro 2017 bootcamp windows 10 freezes when connecting Apple USB C AV digital adapter

Hello community,

I have a Macbook pro 15 2017.

From the start I have been using Mac OS and Windows interchangeably.

One day I connected the Apple USB C adapter and windows froze. I checked if the same problem is in MacOS and it does not seem to appear.

Other usb c adapters work the same.

I work around I found was starting up windows letting it run for a bit then connecting the usb adapter.

The laptop sees all the usb devices connected to the usb c adapter but does not see the hdmi which is a problem. It then turns the screen connected on and off and eventually gets a stable connection.

What would I do in this case? Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for windows?

I tested this on mine and it is not happening - I boot up with things already connected and do not get a freeze. I haven't gotten one since the reset. I booted up with my VGA dongle, Ethernet dongle and a USB stick connected. The Ethernet dongle very reliably caused the freezes before. It has not frozen. Not sure why the fix on mine hasn't fixed it completely on yours.

If you have access to the AMD Control panel, we should check individual parts of the drivers.

Just wanted to update on the situation before I do it:

- when I connect anything while windows is running it will freeze the screen

- workaround I found is connect the cable, restart the laptop and then let it run for like 2 minutes and it does not freeze but the screen connects the disconnects at least 2 times before establishing a good connection

Well, i have a similar issue. In MacOs everything works fine. (2017 Macbook Pro)

When i boot up windows and have my usb dongle in, it freezes. I had it even before i had an external monitor but now i have the same problem as described here.

Basicly USB-C dongle hub, needs to be in. Then after loading for some time i have to unplug it. Wait plug again and hope for the best. Often i need 4-5 reboots before its usable.

Did the SMC - did not help

Did the apple software update, found 2 updates 1 for the graphics - did not help

The update was done when I connected the device in macOS it just gave a pop up to update and I did it.

Can this be a hardware problem? Is there a way to install windows a older version of windows 10 from the official Microsoft page?

I started having this problem too just yesterday. I did upgrade to High Sierra last week but didn't have the problem immediately after the update for some reason. I have a macbook pro 2016 with touchbar.

I cannot use ANY USB devices in Windows, they cause a freeze, usually within 30-60 seconds of connecting the dongle. Any USB dongle (video or ethernet) or even USB flash drive (data stick). Exact same issue - CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT blue screen of death, unless I unplug the device quickly enough after the mouse pointer freezes, then it unfreezes several seconds later instead of blue screening. If I don't unplug the device it consistently blue screens CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT.

Everything in MacOS works perfectly. All symptoms identical to the O.P.

It is a very serious issue that I cannot use any USB devices in Windows - help!

I don't think this was caused by a Windows update - as I said I reverted back to the 14th.

I do see Sunday the 19th in MacOS it shows it installed MRTConfigData and XProtectPlistConfigData, I upgraded to High Sierra on the 17th. However the next day, the 20th, I used a dongle in Windows and it worked. The 20th was the last day that I tried using a dongle and it worked, after that I rebooted to MacOS for the next few days. Didn't try on the 21st, on the 22nd I rebooted into Windows to give a presentation and found that any dongle caused a freeze or blue screen.

I tried reverting back to a system restore from the 14th in Windows but it made no difference.

The Windows 10 forced updates model is not generally a problem on actual regular Windows systems, but more risky on a Mac, less people testing boot camp I guess.
