Macbook pro 2017 bootcamp windows 10 freezes when connecting Apple USB C AV digital adapter

Hello community,

I have a Macbook pro 15 2017.

From the start I have been using Mac OS and Windows interchangeably.

One day I connected the Apple USB C adapter and windows froze. I checked if the same problem is in MacOS and it does not seem to appear.

Other usb c adapters work the same.

I work around I found was starting up windows letting it run for a bit then connecting the usb adapter.

The laptop sees all the usb devices connected to the usb c adapter but does not see the hdmi which is a problem. It then turns the screen connected on and off and eventually gets a stable connection.

What would I do in this case? Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for windows?

No, I was searching and could not find someone else with my problem. I only found you b/c I was coming here to post my own thread and then I saw yours and clicked and was surprised to see that you were having the exact same issue. I posted in the Microsoft Windows support community as well just now, in case they have an idea.

It would not be consistent either with the issues I was seeing. I could understand, if Windows was hanging during some kind of file system related operation, that it could be getting confused by APFS, but plugging in a VGA dongle should not do anything in particular to trigger a file system operation that would make it suddenly find the APFS drive and try to scan it.

No, it is not in the wizard. Ignore the wizard, all that allows you to do is delete Windows which is not what you want. Instead, as I said, you need to access the menu at the very top of the screen. The option is hidden up in there, it doesn't appear in the boot camp wizard window.

Ok so I have done everything. the issue is still here but smaller, when I restart the laptop and have something connected it still freezes, but when its running and I connect something it works fine. Any other suggestions?

By this I mean when I launch windows and have something connected it still freezes, but when in windows already booted and I connect something it will work no problem but still sometimes causes a freeze.....

I had the Apple USB C AV (HDMI) adapter up until a month ago when mine was stolen 😟

It did work on this system with no issues. I unfortunately can't test it now because I haven't gotten a replacement.

Does the freeze cause a blue screen in your situation? I would get a freeze, then 10-15 seconds later the computer would blue screen and reboot, although sometimes the blue screen was so brief that you couldn't see it, it would just reboot.

There are some differences, but nothing significant stands out. You have a Radeon Pro 560. The 15-in model has both Pro 555 and Pro 560 GPUs as noted in MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) - Technical Specifications .

We should wait for mducharme to confirm the GPU model.

I have installed the drivers from both pages. Installed the one from AMD page first, did not fix the issue, then installed the one from bootcampdrivers. Also did not fix the issue. No idea why this problem is still here.

Yes thats what I am using. After I connect it it sees all my usb devices but not the hdmi. The monitor I am using is a Acer G257HU so it is HDCP capable

Yes I have tried several times to reinstall windows hoping it will fix the issue, but it did not help. Attached the version of windows I have.
