Apple Carplay stopped working Accord 2018

Looking for assistance:

I have a 2018 honda accord. I have been driving it for a mere 2 weeks. Apple carplay was working wonderfully for 2 weeks until yesterday. No changes to the phone, just stopped working. Now I cannot get it working. I have tried the following:

Change Cable

Change USB port

Update OS (now 11.1.1)

Reset Network settings

Disabled all restrictions

iCloud backup performed

Phone model is 7 Plus. The car recognizes the phone, works in USB mode as well as bluetooth mode. In the smartphone settings on the car itself, it has the phone as enabled. I click connect and it just says cannot connect, no smartphone device detected.

I'm really at a loss here. This should be plug and play but it is most definitely not.

Hi ddugas1970,

I understand that CarPlay is no longer working as expected with your 2018 Honda Accord. I'd like to provide a resource to help you troubleshoot this issue. Please follow these steps to address this issue:

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

Had similar problem on my 2018 Accord Sport. Android auto worked fine, and then I switched to an iPhone X last week, resulting in the aforementioned USB connection error message. I performed a System Update yesterday and now Apple CarPlay works, so I’m assuming there is a software issue with the head unit. I did not perform a factory reset.

Thank you Em_Phil for your help! I'm not a techie person, so am not sure what a system update is - do you mean making sure my phone is updated to the latest iOS? Mine is Version 11.4 which I think is the most recent. Haven't tried a different phone yet, but that is a good idea - will do that in the morning. Phone I am using is iPhone S.

Thanks again Em_phil! I went out to the car and did the Update and it said my system was up to date. My youngest son said it works on his iPhone, so the next time it locks up on mine, before I do a re-set, I'll attach his phone and see if it works on his. After I tried to do the System Update on the car, I plugged my phone in and currently it is working, but it will work about 2 out of every 3 times I start the car.

I have had to reboot my phone, in addition to the factory data reset in the car. If Carplay works on one phone but not another, I would suggest you reset the phone, too (press off/sleep and home button for about 10 seconds until apple logo is displayed). Phone power cycling and resets are a good practice in general, because there is some maintenance iOS does when powering up. And it is non-destructive and only takes a minute.

I have many issues with the 2018 Accord infotainment system. I have done the factory reset at least 5 different times. Sometimes it will allow the messaging feature and most times not by saying the phone needs to allow notifications. Sometimes it loads my contacts, sometimes not. It reboots randomly while I am driving. Calls sometimes transfer back to my phone during a call and then the radio can't be turned off. Sometimes the other doors can't be unlocked with the key fob after the drivers door is opened by the handle. The navigation loading of saved addresses is painfully long. I want to rip it out of the car. The apple car play doesn't work on bluetooth. After a call, it won't return to the audio but sometimes remains on the phone screen with no audio.

The Honda dealer admitted there are issues with the Iphone and the system but there is no known solution other than factory resets. He said the phones are now sending 10 times as much data to the system than what was designed and that it can't keep up. I am ready to trade the car in after only 2,000 miles. Is there any solution to all of this? It seems more than just an issue with the phone since it affects so many functions.

Same issue just bought the car and it worked for a few days and stopped. Bought a new apple cable, updated my iphone for a minor update, tried to update the car but said it had the latest update.. I understand a full car reboot works temporarily but what's the point of that. I was streaming Pandora via carplay so I wonder if that much data (really not that much) causes the crash. Really the worst of both worlds. Car doesn't have a CD and you can't stream music via carplay (works with bluetooth but not loudly/clearly).

I think I have the solution... at least it worked for me. I had changed to aftermarket iphone 8 cables and found that Car Play needed genuine Apple cables in order to work. I also found that once I got Car Play to work, after 2 weeks of not working, that if you turn on your Bluetooth, on the phone, then you will immediately lose your Car Play function. Turn off Bluetooth, then turning the radio off, then back on, and Car Play reappears.

I am having a similar issue with a 2016 Accord and an iPhone 8 Plus. Sometimes it works the whole drive. Sometimes it works, then a few minutes into the drive says "No Device Connected". I was hopeful that ios 12 might resolve this. Nope! I also agree this is probably a Honda problem related to a crappy tablet they are using for the touchscreen. This is really aggravating since one of the reasons I purchased this car was because it supported CarPlay.

I’ve had the same problem....if it’s a Honda....in the car (while running) tap the “settings” icon on the touch screen then tap “systems“ then “factory data reset“ then “continue”....this has worked every time for me in re-establishing an operating CarPlay system.
