Apple Carplay stopped working Accord 2018

Looking for assistance:

I have a 2018 honda accord. I have been driving it for a mere 2 weeks. Apple carplay was working wonderfully for 2 weeks until yesterday. No changes to the phone, just stopped working. Now I cannot get it working. I have tried the following:

Change Cable

Change USB port

Update OS (now 11.1.1)

Reset Network settings

Disabled all restrictions

iCloud backup performed

Phone model is 7 Plus. The car recognizes the phone, works in USB mode as well as bluetooth mode. In the smartphone settings on the car itself, it has the phone as enabled. I click connect and it just says cannot connect, no smartphone device detected.

I'm really at a loss here. This should be plug and play but it is most definitely not.

I've had my car a little over a week and it stopped working. The only way to connect my phone is via Bluetooth. I have an iPhone 7 plus the software is up to date. Yesterday I did a system reset back to factory 4 times which was useless because all the presets are still in the unit so nothing changes. There seems to be little information out on the issue. I also noticed the USB ports do not charge the phone. So it might be a defect in the equipment not yet discovered. My cables are new apple cables so it's not that.

sadly, i noted the fix a few weeks back and the issue has now resurfaced-cannot connect to carplay-check USB connection. I will factory reset my car settings again, but clearly there is a deeper issue at play-the way the entertainment system is interfacing with the device. I'm hoping a firmware update from Honda will do it. Until then, I will reset my car every few weeks. I'll also run this by the dealer before doing multiple times.

I talked to Honda Tech support did not find it troubling at all that the factory reset didn't clear anything in the vehicle. Even when I told her I had done it several times already she insisted that although it was odd it was not the problem. I was referred back to the dealership after we tried 2 more times to reset the vehicle. I guess I'm off to the dealership this weekend. The rep said since the USB ports aren't charging that must be the problem. But yet I connected a flash drive and it picked it up just fine.

Have you tried deleting the phone from your Honda's Smartphone settings and the Honda from the CarPlay settings? I've done that after some updates and noticed it worked for me. I have a 2016 Civic with CarPlay and have had some issues with CarPlay not even showing up. I usually see the black screen and a notice of nothing connected or that CarPlay couldn't start and to try again when I've stopped my car to retry plugging my phone in. My local dealer stated that each time Apple does an update to the OS I should be deleting the profile from both and allowing it to reset up as new after updates. Usually just deleting the profile from the Honda is all I was told I needed to do but in some cases I've deleted both and saw improvements. Honda recently told me newer phones from Apple and Android makers are not compatible but I've seen better CarPlay experience using my X than my 6.

Adding to this thread so this problem is hopefully resolved soon. I have an iPhone 7 plus running iOS 11.2.1. CarPlay has been working fine since I got the car roughly a month ago. But now I get the dreaded 'cannot start carplay' error whenever the cable is plugged in. I have tried both having it plugged in before starting the car and after, and connecting manually through settings, nothing works.

I, too, have a 2018 Accord and an iPhone X. After a week of having the car and carplay working fine it started saying check the USB connection. I tried 3 iPhone's and 5 cables (apple cables) and still said the same thing. I did a factory data reset and have not had issues since.

I think Honda will update the software down the road. Everyday I check for updates to the car and nothing since I've bought it.

Thanks for posting that message from Honda CaClark724. It was clear there was a compatibility issue. I only wanted to add that after my reset, my carplay has been working but there are issues with various features at times, including the phone with loud feedback. I have noticed something concrete that seems to cause Carplay to stop working. If I use my remote car starter and plug in my phone before I "start" the car when in, I will get that message "carplay cannot start check usb cable" everytime. I believe this is how I first got the error too.

So, if anyone is dealing with this recurring issue, I just wanted to note that if you are using the remote car starter, make sure to hold the brake and press start when entering the vehicle before plugging in your phone.

I just had this issue with my new 2018 Accord. You Hard Reset your car my removing the positive on the battery terminal. Mine used a #10 to loosen the nut. Super easy and not worth he wait at the dealer. Not to be rude but I’ll place the steps below.

- open hood

- unclip housing for red positive on battery to access nut (if yours has one)

- loosen nut (#10 socket worked fine for me)

- remove positive connection from battery

- wait a few moments (30 seconds should be fine)

- replace positive back on battery terminal

- tighten nut

- clip red plastic housing around positive terminal (if yours has one)

- close hood

- start car

- plug in phone

- test CarPlay

I hope this helps and is super easy, don’t let all the steps away you. It’s literally as easy as removing the positive terminal and the putting it back on.

rthomas47 you da man! Yup. Factory Data Reset fixed it. No need for a hard reset or popping the hood to remove the negative terminal (thus resetting the ecu). I started having this issue about a month into owning my 2018 Honda Fit Sport. After the first month Carplay stopped connecting intermittently. The only thing that worked was removing the negative battery terminal from under the hood then reconnecting it. But really? This is a terrible issue that Honda needs to address asap. At least now I can reset the system safely without having to do a hard reset or pop the hood and get my 10mm socket just to access functionality that should be seamless on a $20k new car. Thank you for an at least temporary solution. GET ON IT HONDA!

How did you perform your factory data reset.? Mine is greyed out and won't let me select it. I parked my car in the garage to connect to my wifi and every time I attempt to perform a software update, it states I can't perform this action while in motion. The car was turned off and on multiple times. At one point I saw the ability to download over wifi but it stated again that the action couldn't be performed while in motion. I don't think this has anything to do with iOS 11.2.5 (which I did install yesterday and this is the first time it has ever happened). I guess I will disconnect the negative connection on my battery.

Don't you just love new tech....

Here are the steps sent to me by the dealer:

Go to Settings, Systems Settings, Factory Data Refresh

Select Factory Data Refresh. When the system boots back up it may bring up a key pad for you to enter a code -- no code is necessary -- just press and hold the power button until the screen resumes.

You may have to re-pair your phone.

When this first started happening to me I would remove the negative terminal for about 5 minutes and reattach. That always works, but is a nuisance solution. To have to pop the hood and grab a 10mm just to solve some ridiculous connectivity fail. Plus, that resets the entire engine ecu which is not something you want to do unless you have to. When I came across this forum in hopes of finding a solve that was either via a Honda recall or firmware update, I stumbled upon the Factory Data Reset under the system settings. It has worked for me for about a week and precludes me from having to pop the hood and grab tools which is ridiculous for a car that is 5 months old.
