Apple Carplay stopped working Accord 2018

Looking for assistance:

I have a 2018 honda accord. I have been driving it for a mere 2 weeks. Apple carplay was working wonderfully for 2 weeks until yesterday. No changes to the phone, just stopped working. Now I cannot get it working. I have tried the following:

Change Cable

Change USB port

Update OS (now 11.1.1)

Reset Network settings

Disabled all restrictions

iCloud backup performed

Phone model is 7 Plus. The car recognizes the phone, works in USB mode as well as bluetooth mode. In the smartphone settings on the car itself, it has the phone as enabled. I click connect and it just says cannot connect, no smartphone device detected.

I'm really at a loss here. This should be plug and play but it is most definitely not.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11.1

I just had this issue with my new 2018 Accord. You Hard Reset your car my removing the positive on the battery terminal. Mine used a #10 to loosen the nut. Super easy and not worth he wait at the dealer. Not to be rude but I’ll place the steps below.

- open hood

- unclip housing for red positive on battery to access nut (if yours has one)

- loosen nut (#10 socket worked fine for me)

- remove positive connection from battery

- wait a few moments (30 seconds should be fine)

- replace positive back on battery terminal

- tighten nut

- clip red plastic housing around positive terminal (if yours has one)

- close hood

- start car

- plug in phone

- test CarPlay

I hope this helps and is super easy, don’t let all the steps away you. It’s literally as easy as removing the positive terminal and the putting it back on.

LOL....I won't ask your age, but I'm "massively" impressed by anyone in computer/computer-based profession. I had to chuckle when I read your comment regarding your profession. When I was in the military back in 1968, one of my fellow Marines had a background in computers. That had nothing to do with his military occupation, but our superiors knew that he was proficient in computer work. Consequently, he voluntarily worked every Saturday morning, helping with programming, I believe. Get this. The computer was so large, that it was housed inside of an aircraft hangar. I tagged along one Saturday, just to see what these "computers" were all about. All I recall, is that the machine was huge and I had no clue what he was doing, but the computer people were very happy with him. My friend had a degree in business, but opined that computer technology would evolve over the years and that we might even see one in our personal lives. He had an interest in computers, so I have no doubt that he pursued a career in that field after leaving the service. Little did I know at the time, that I'd be communicating with someone 50 yrs later and casually discussing "CarPlay" and Honda. LOL.

Btw, I took delivery of my CRV this past November. I've been using CarPlay since day one. This morning, I decided to spend some time in the car learning the standard built-in bluetooth, wi-fi, etc. as an alternative to CarPlay just in case. After learning and using the system for about an hour, I now realize just how great CarPlay is. Didn't realize how spoiled I am with CarPlay. I'll tolerate its quirkiness until a resolution is found.

I have a new Honda 2018 CR-V. Apple car ply does not work. Blue tooth connection works fine. When apple car play is selected from settings, “No Apple CarPlay device is connected” message shows up. The smart phone labeled port is working and phone is charging.

Tried Hard reset on the car. Powered off and on iphone. Disconnecred apple watch. Nothing works. One of my reason to get this CRV model is apple carplay. Now what? Any help appreciated.

Sorry to read that the update didn't work for you. I've posted a few times within this thread regarding this issue. I have an '18 CRV and of course, experiencing the same CarPlay issue. I'd say my carplay works 70% of the time. In my case, I bought my CRV based on my transportation needs and Honda's great reputation for engineering and reliability. The carplay thing was just a novelty until I realized just how useful this feature is. I've learned to live with its quirkiness until Honda/Apple figure out a fix. What I expect from Honda, is for the powertrain and body integrity to hold up well for at least 100,000 miles. The CarPlay feature is just an accessory that makes entertainment and communication a little easier. In the meantime, I'll monitor this thread for the latest tips or solution from Honda/Apple.

Thanks for the response. Yeah different strokes for different folks I suppose in regards to why someone decides on a certain vehicle. For me I wanted the Apple CarPlay (of course I also expect it will hold up, safety, etc) and feel somewhat deceived that the Honda dealers aren’t being transparent about the issue. While a “novelty” feature to some, I’m a firm believer that if a company can’t do the little things right then how are they going to do the big things? Doesn’t inspire much confidence for me. A new car/vehicle should work as described. I wouldn’t buy a Honda again based on this experience so far. While trying to be hopeful, it looks like they have no clue how to fix this. Buyer beware.

I think the problem is with CarPlay and a very new model (completely new software system), so never buying a Honda again doesn't sense for me (I love the 2.0T Accord on balance and new full well that getting a brand new model would come with some issues). If you want to do something a Class Action Suit isn't the way to go for many reasons. Most states have Lemon Laws that stipulate reasonable expectations for resolving this kind of issue. In your Honda contract you agreed I think to arbitration (Honda uses a respected US arbitration firm).

@prchristy

Totally agree with your comment. I've been following this thread since original post and can understand the anger/frustration expressed by owners. When I bought my '18 CRV in December, my priority was to buy a well engineered Honda vehicle which will serve me well for a few years. CarPlay was a non-factor in my purchase decision, since I viewed it as an entertainment novelty. I did set it up thinking that I probably wouldn't use it much. Boy, was I wrong. I've become addicted to it and am really enjoying it, even with the spotty connection issues. I sure don't see a fix anytime soon. My CRV also has AndroidAuto available. I'll have to borrow a friends Android cell phone and test its operation. I wonder how that option (AndroidAuto) is working for 2018 Accord owners who use Android smartphones. I viewed a YouTube vid on AndroidAuto in Honda and noticed that it (AndroidAuto) also supports WAZE, which is a really great navigation app.

Purchased car on 7/4/18 and Apple Car Play hasn't worked since I got the car (2.5 days ago). I took the car to the dealership and they did a hard battery reset. It worked until I got it home, and when I went back to the car for a trip to the grocery store, it stopped working again. I've reset it at the car level 4 times now.

I purchased a new cable directly from apple (recommended by the car dealership manager) - that did not solve the problem.

I have 3 days to return the car. Do you think getting a different new car will solve the problem? Is this problem universal for all 2018 Honda Accord owners, or just a subset of owners?

Original post was November of 2017 - this is very discouraging. Why hasn't Honda fixed this problem.

Thank you Em_Phil for your help! I'm not a techie person, so am not sure what a system update is - do you mean making sure my phone is updated to the latest iOS? Mine is Version 11.4 which I think is the most recent. Haven't tried a different phone yet, but that is a good idea - will do that in the morning. Phone I am using is iPhone S.

Jul 6, 2018 7:17 PM in response to EM_phil

Thanks again Em_phil! I went out to the car and did the Update and it said my system was up to date. My youngest son said it works on his iPhone, so the next time it locks up on mine, before I do a re-set, I'll attach his phone and see if it works on his. After I tried to do the System Update on the car, I plugged my phone in and currently it is working, but it will work about 2 out of every 3 times I start the car.

In my case, on my 2016 Honda Accord Touring, the Apple CarPlay field has abruptly disappeared from my Home screen altogether, replaced by "Smartphone." If you choose that, you get to a screen asking if you want to enable CarPlay. If you select Enable, it takes you to a screen showing which phones you can enable. If you choose the phone you have connected, it takes you BACK to the screen asking if you want to enable CarPlay. It just cycles back and forth between the two.

CarPlay has been working flawlessly with Apple Maps for at least a year, and more recently accommodated the Deezer, TuneInRadio and Google Maps apps as well. No problems until today, when it simply disappeared from the Home menu as if it had never been there.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions? Help will be welcomed gratefully!
