Apple Carplay stopped working Accord 2018

Looking for assistance:

I have a 2018 honda accord. I have been driving it for a mere 2 weeks. Apple carplay was working wonderfully for 2 weeks until yesterday. No changes to the phone, just stopped working. Now I cannot get it working. I have tried the following:

Change Cable

Change USB port

Update OS (now 11.1.1)

Reset Network settings

Disabled all restrictions

iCloud backup performed

Phone model is 7 Plus. The car recognizes the phone, works in USB mode as well as bluetooth mode. In the smartphone settings on the car itself, it has the phone as enabled. I click connect and it just says cannot connect, no smartphone device detected.

I'm really at a loss here. This should be plug and play but it is most definitely not.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11.1

I just had this issue with my new 2018 Accord. You Hard Reset your car my removing the positive on the battery terminal. Mine used a #10 to loosen the nut. Super easy and not worth he wait at the dealer. Not to be rude but I’ll place the steps below.

- open hood

- unclip housing for red positive on battery to access nut (if yours has one)

- loosen nut (#10 socket worked fine for me)

- remove positive connection from battery

- wait a few moments (30 seconds should be fine)

- replace positive back on battery terminal

- tighten nut

- clip red plastic housing around positive terminal (if yours has one)

- close hood

- start car

- plug in phone

- test CarPlay

I hope this helps and is super easy, don’t let all the steps away you. It’s literally as easy as removing the positive terminal and the putting it back on.

I tried a few things that seemed to have worked for me. Please note I am not exactly sure if all these steps are required but this is what worked for me.

Phone:

  1. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version.
  2. Under Settings -> General -> Reset -> Click on "Reset Network Settings" (Doing this will reset your Cellular, WIFI and VPN settings)
  3. Restart your phone. Even better if you do a soft reset. (iPhone 7+ press and hold at the same time the Lock button on the right side as well as the Volume Down button on the left side. Keep holding it until the device turns off, it should turn itself back on if it does not then you did it wrong.)
  4. Turn off WIFI and Bluetooth.

Car:

1. Disconnect all iPhone cables from any USB.

2. Turn on car, go to your Apple CarPlay Connection settings and remove your device from the list, to do so click on the device and then Edit and from there you'll see an option to remove the device.

3. Perform a Factory Data Reset. (This will reset your car's settings of course.)

4. Turn off car, wait 30 seconds and turn back on.

5. After car is back on, wait for the home screen to fully load. (Click on Ok if driver warning message pops up and give it at least 30 seconds)

6. Once car has been on and home screen has been loaded, connect the USB cable to the USB port on the car, and then connect it to the iPhone. (Not sure if this helps but have your iPhone unlocked and on the Home screen when you do this.)

Apple CarPlay should now work. I am not sure if having Bluetooth/WIFI on will affect the connectivity in any way but I always have it off just in case. Also going forward whenever you start your car, wait at least 30 seconds after home screen is fully loaded before connecting your phone to the cable. Similarly before turning off your car, disconnect your phone from the cable and wait at least 30 seconds before turning off the car.

Some steps may be unnecessary but this is the method that worked for me and it's been a few days. Will report back if system fails again.

Apparently my 2017 Civic was late to this party, although I switched from Android to Apple recently.

My iPhone connection failed after restarting the car while the phone was connected and previously working fine.

The infortainment reset allowed me to reconnect my phone successfully. I was surprised that other settings such as FM radio presets were retained. The process is a bit scary because after the car reports that the reset has completed, it takes a couple minutes for anything to display. I restarted the car during that interval. I don't know if that was helpful, harmful or pointless.

The Honda infortainment system reset is accompished with the following menu sequence:

1. Home

2. Settings

3. System

4. Scroll right to tab "Others" and scroll down or scroll down repeatedly from tab "All".

5. Factory Data Reset

6. Approve several times

7. Get the "all done" message.

8. Wait

I, too, have a 2018 Accord and an iPhone X. After a week of having the car and carplay working fine it started saying check the USB connection. I tried 3 iPhone's and 5 cables (apple cables) and still said the same thing. I did a factory data reset and have not had issues since.

I think Honda will update the software down the road. Everyday I check for updates to the car and nothing since I've bought it.

rthomas47 you da man! Yup. Factory Data Reset fixed it. No need for a hard reset or popping the hood to remove the negative terminal (thus resetting the ecu). I started having this issue about a month into owning my 2018 Honda Fit Sport. After the first month Carplay stopped connecting intermittently. The only thing that worked was removing the negative battery terminal from under the hood then reconnecting it. But really? This is a terrible issue that Honda needs to address asap. At least now I can reset the system safely without having to do a hard reset or pop the hood and get my 10mm socket just to access functionality that should be seamless on a $20k new car. Thank you for an at least temporary solution. GET ON IT HONDA!

Here are the steps sent to me by the dealer:

Go to Settings, Systems Settings, Factory Data Refresh

Select Factory Data Refresh. When the system boots back up it may bring up a key pad for you to enter a code -- no code is necessary -- just press and hold the power button until the screen resumes.

You may have to re-pair your phone.

When this first started happening to me I would remove the negative terminal for about 5 minutes and reattach. That always works, but is a nuisance solution. To have to pop the hood and grab a 10mm just to solve some ridiculous connectivity fail. Plus, that resets the entire engine ecu which is not something you want to do unless you have to. When I came across this forum in hopes of finding a solve that was either via a Honda recall or firmware update, I stumbled upon the Factory Data Reset under the system settings. It has worked for me for about a week and precludes me from having to pop the hood and grab tools which is ridiculous for a car that is 5 months old.

Here is what I tried and it worked for my 2018 Honda Accord

1) Follow this path on your iPhone - Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data

If you see entries on the screen, then there are cookies downloaded on your phone that can be causing confusion for CarPlay. If there are cookies (sites) on the screen, then click back 2 screens to the Safari settings screen and click on "Clear History and Website Data". This will clear all entries on the Website Data screen. Go to #2.

2) Follow this path on your iPhone - Settings > General > CarPlay

Click on the car listed and on the next screen click on the "Forget This Car" and it will delete your car from CarPlay.

3) Perform an iPhone reset. Then go out to your car, plug in your iPhone and it should be working now.

Same issue here on my wife's 2018 Accord Touring. CarPlay worked fine for the first two weeks then suddenly stopped today. I updated the firmware the day we brought the car home, but honestly can't recall if we had already set the CarPlay connection up prior.

Removing the phone then resetting via the display got CarPlay connected again just now. I did get stuck on a screen asking for an anti-theft code which apparently was suppose to be on a card I never received, but eventually figured out starting the car bypassed it.

Hopefully the reset resolves it for good as others seem to have reported on here. We only choose the Accord over the Camry due to CarPlay support so this would be a major disappointment.
