Admin vs Standard account for use on daily basis on macOS High Sierra

Hi to all,

On prior versions of macOS High Sierra I used a Standard account on a daily basis and not the Admin account (first account created). It is recommend the same practice on macOS High Sierra?

Thanks and regards,

I already did the security update to patch the root login. So, I will continue to use the standard account instead of Admin account like I used in previous versions.

BTY can you tell me where I can find that recommendation on Apple website?

It's a standard best practice. I don't know where one might find such a reference in Apple's documentation.

As per this article macOS Sierra: administrator

An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator.

Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators .

  • Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
  • Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.

The admin account has more privileges than standard account .

That's the claim - and IF you do use it in ADMIN account - Better to have a second never used just in case. Ive got 5, why, because of past problems... anyhoo. I'm always in an Admin account every day, all day, and I switch accounts to do things like back up iPhone, or Watch Video/Movies, etc.

My main user account has at finger tip ready access to many programs and files

User uploaded file

, the other accounts do not and my dock and desktop are very minimal.

I don't particularly see a reason why to do what you say you do anyway, so I have no real recommendation as whether or not you should do it.

But since you insist you do, there's no real downside to doing it. Generally, computers have one admin and multiple standard accounts (if necessary) where those users use their standard accounts just fine for what they intend on doing. Just note, some things (like installing software) will require you to use the administrator password to do things and some programs may request an admin password to run certain parts of their program requiring more than just basic access (if somehow necessary) to your computer.
