"Other Volume in Container" size keeps growing from 1.75GB to 55GB repeatedly in 20 minutes!

I have roughly 55GB free space on my disk, but today I received an notice from the system said that my disk is almost full. So I was wondering, how is that possible? I click the apple logo, and go to the storage, and noticed that there is a category called "Other Volumes in Container" (originally is 1.75GB) is keep growing, taking all my 55GB steps by steps. Until it reaches the 55GB available limits, "the growing process" stopped, and the size of the "Other Volume in Container" goes back to 1.75GB, and start to grow again from that point.

After I restart my Mac, "Other Volumes in Container" goes back to 1.75GB at the beginning for the first 5 mins, but start growing again. I called apple, they were trying to help me figure out what is in that "Container", but they can't. One senior advisor told me that it may due to some third party apps I am using, but I am not opening any third party apps at all, and "the growing process" just keep repeating. We tried to check whether the Mac is attacked by any virus, but nothing found.

My mac is getting hot due to this "growing process", and unexpectedly shut down several times. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my Mac?😢 I am desperate!

No, I can't remember what he said about the restore, since I don't want to do it, so maybe he mentioned it, but I just directly pass that option 😁 and didn't pay attention to what he said.

Actually when I create a new account, it grows as well, but like you said slower. Also I realize I won't get the warning of "Your disk is full" anymore in the new account, so I guess there should be something going on on the background, and the system needs to take some of your storage to process something, after that it will be released automatically.

Ignore the storage indicator. There is a long standing bug in Spotlight that makes the Storage indicator give really weird results. If you rebuild the Spotlight index the storage indicate may return an accurate result for a short period of time but then the bug begins its work. This is why creating a new account works - a new spotlight index is created for your new account. The important thing is this: if you select a folder (or the entire hard drive) and select Get Info from the Finder menu, you'll get an accurate indication of how much space is being used.

As to what why your drive is filling up so quickly, it is almost certainly either a cache file or a console log (a file that holds system error messages). Try this: restart and hold the shift key until the Apple icon appears. This will restart the computer in Safe Mode. Among other things, a safe start will check the hard drive integrity, erase/trim cache files, and start up with a reduced set of system extensions. You'll lose some functionality but will be able to go online, run most programs, etc but some things won't work.

For your purposes the safe startup will do 3 things: 1) check your drive, 2) delete your caches, 3) let you run the computer for a short time and see if the drive starts to fill up again. Give it 15-20 minutes and reboot normally. Again, see what happens and let us know if the drive fills up again - be sure to mention the results of the safe start. It would also be a good idea to download and run etrecheck from etrecheck.com which is a diagnostic tool created by an ASC user. It provides useful information to those of us trying to help

I've done this before when I was on the line with the Advisor. It didn't fill up anymore but like you say, certain functionalities won't work. After I restarted normally again it started to ''fill up'' the storage again.

Don't know really what to do about this...either way I was already considering an upgrade as I work from a Air and I want to change to a Pro. My question is, if I make a backup with Time Machine, export that to a new Macbook Pro, will that affect the new Macbook or does is it purely an issue in the software of the current Macbook Air?

You do not have enough RAM in that computer to be running ElCapitan or later, and you are WAY short for all the stuff you are trying to run.

I think you may be asking that low-end computer to do too much.

I strongly suggest you stop using Chrome, a known memory leaker and resource-hog, and try a different browser. FireFox has a new major version available that is getting good reviews, and Safari has a new version as well. You may have to quit your Browser when you want to do other activities.

I agree with Grant. In addition, you obviously had TeamViewer installed at one time and improperly deleted it. If you go to their Web site you might find instructions for deleting it properly or you could just download it again and use the built in uninstaller to remove it. You have 4 kernel extensions which might be part of the problem - they are for Boom, MacX Video Converter, iSkySoft Audio recorder, and Apowersoft.

The UserEventAgent is a daemon that oversees/manages various user input drivers - and could well be involved in your issue if it is logging lots of errors. I've seen Error Logs grow tremendously in a short period of time. I think you should consider checking the vendor Web sites of those products (Boom etc) for how to uninstall the kexts and related files. Whether you are running software that's incompatible with your operating system or software that isn't getting along with other software, I suspect that you have lots of errors being logged which is the cause of your quickly shrinking drive space.

Dec 13, 2017 11:28 AM in response to dwb

Maybe this was the trigger but until 3 days ago I never had an issue. No problem with RAM, memory or blowing air (only when exporting videos which is obvious). Always smooth and quiet, even using multiple apps at once (Google, Lightroom and or Premiere Pro and After Effects).

Either way is there a solution for the Month 13 issue or we simply have to wait for an update?
