iTunes 12.7.2 crashes after update

When I run the program, it crashes. If you disable the Internet, it does not crash.

Hmm, working for me on High Sierra. Reinstall the previous build?

Here are some recent builds of iTunes direct from Apple's secure servers in case you want to try working with an older version:

iTunes12.5.5.5.dmg

(2017-01-23)

Tunes12.6.0.100.dmg

(2017-03-23)

iTunes12.6.1.25.dmg

(2017-05-15)

iTunes12.6.1.27.dmg

(2017-05-23)

iTunes12.6.2.20.dmg

(2017-07-19)

iTunes12.6.3.6.dmg

(2017-09-22)

iTunes12.7.0.166.dmg

(2017-09-12)

iTunes12.7.1.14.dmg

(2017-10-30)

iTunes12.7.2.58.dmg

(2017-12-06)

iTunes 12.6.3 can be installed over iTunes 12.7 if you wish to recover the app and tone management features that were removed in 12.7, however in general downgrading iTunes on a Mac is harder than upgrading or reinstalling. See this guide to uninstall iTunes from a Mac: http://www.inforaid.com/how-to-uninstall-itunes-from-mac-os-x-best-method/. When reverting to an earlier build you often need to restore an older version of the library database as shown in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash or from another suitable backup such as Time Machine.

Good news, seems it's a problem with AirPlay/mDNS. Unload the service and iTunes is not crushing anymore.

Bad news.

  • With unloaded service iTunes is still unusable. When mDNSResponder service is unloaded iTunes can't initialise itself, stucking on apple logo.
  • Second bad thing, you can't simply execute "sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist". You need to disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) at first, and that is bad for security.
  • When mDNSResponder is down, all AirPlay services are stop working.

I have the same problem. When I have WiFi or Ethernet turned on, iTune crashes on startup. But when the WiFi or Ethernet is disabled, iTune comes up fine. I have tried the following steps:

  • Reinstalled iTunes 12.7.2
  • Reinstall iTunes 12.6.2
  • Reinstalled High Sierra 10.13.2 Combo
  • Restore several known working iTunes libraries from Time Machine backups

They all failed. I then call Apple Support and they said I need to do a clean install of High Sierra, removing all data. Which I can't believe will resolve the problem and I'm subscribing to Apple Music which I can't access. The following is my hardware config:

  • Macbook Pro 13" later 2016 with touch bar
  • Thunderbolt Display

Kwan

Somehow it is a network issue. When mac is not connected to the internet (in my case corporate guest wifi network) iTunes starts, but when connection establishes iTunes immediately crashes. When wifi is shared from the iPhone, iTunes is working without crashing.

What's wrong with Apple? So many software issues, iTunes keeps crashing after updated to the latest version and unable to reopen it. Download and reinstall from Mac App Store is NO USE. Unplug ethernet will stop the crashing but plug back the cable, it crashes again. Download and reinstall previous iTunes version is same. Hope Apple can release patch to fix the problem at the soonest.

I cleaned my hard drive to make a clean installation of Mac High Sierra OS. It worked fine with 10.6 iTunes. Until I update the iTunes of version 10.7.2, it all crashed again. This is just unbelievablly my most horrible experience on new upgrades

Thank you for posting this!

I had the same issue since updating iTunes and MacOS on 8 Dec, then I contacted Apple support and tried all these troubleshooting methods they suggested:

- Reboot + clear NVRAM

- Open iTunes in safe mode

- Open iTunes on Mac in safe mode

- Reinstall iTunes

- Reinstall MacOS

All didn't help.

Then the specialist advised me that a clean install of MacOS would be the last resort, but I believed it's a bug from the iTunes/ MacOS update so I refused to do so.

If I haven't seen this post, I would probably have given in and tried erasing my hard drive for a clean install of MacOS...

I realise that some people have found other solutions to this, but it's still one of the top results for a search on the issue, so I wanted to add some findings of my own that aren't listed here.

I was experiencing this same issue, and by chance I happened to look at Notification Centre and discover that there's a new widget available, Now Playing, which is functionally identical to the iTunes widget I've been using before.

What I did was, with Notification Centre open, I chose edit, removed the iTunes widget and put the Now Playing widget in its place, now iTunes seems to be stable again. In addition to crashing I also had another issue, which was that my media keys weren't working properly for iTunes, swapping widgets resolved that as well.

In my case I updated from El Capitan to High Sierra (yes, yes, I'm a bit slow to update I know) so I assume the iTunes widget is obsolete now, and somehow has compatibility issues under High Sierra. Why it isn't uninstalled automatically in that case I have no idea, but it's working now so that's what matters.

Or… not. I seem to have jumped the gun there; swapping out the widgets just seem to coincide with a long period of stability, it went right back to crashing again. Also the Now Playing widget doesn't just control iTunes, and is in fact annoying to use since which media it decides is now playing is not consistent (for me it keeps switching to movies that are open in Safari but not playing, even though I've played something else more recently).
