Videos choppy in iMovie, even after sharing

So I have this massive problem. I have hours of recorded videos from my last holiday and i wanted to edit everything together to one movie. Ive done this many times before using iMovie without absolutely any problems.

Videos I have problems with are 1920x1080, 47.95 fps

Camera: Hero3

It is all very strange and frustrating. When I import videos to iMovie they play absolutely fine when I play them from section where all media are stored. Problem starts when I move them to timeline. Playback is choppy. Looks like video is losing some frames. When I export video to file from iMovie its stays choppy. Original clips, straight from camera, before editing play absolutely fine in all kinds of players. Problems start during editing.

The problem doesn't exist with videos from other holidays or trips. Everything works very smoothly and without any problems. The problems applies only to that last batch of videos.

The videos that dont cause any problems are 1920x1080 and 29.97 fps

So the only difference between them is frame rate. Could that be a problem ? Does anyone know how it could be fixed ?

Nothing seems to help so far. Even if I put 2 clips together in GoPro Studio, the effect is the same. they come out choppy.

I tried couple of different editors and effect is the same.

I tried converting clips to different formats, different quality etc. Nothing seems to help.

Its not a hardware problem. I got the same results on 2 different quite powerful Macs

Hmmmm. This is very puzzling.

You have tried almost everything I can think of.

You mentioned in your original post that you "tried couple of different editors and effect is the same" and also different Macs with still the same result. That would indicate that the problem is not with iMovie or your computer but likely related to the clips themselves. (I assume that your computers have updated to current iMovie 10.1.8 and High Sierra. If not, try updating to current.) If your computers are running current apps, then there is something about these 47.95 fps clips that movie editing apps don't like. What audio codec do they have? iMovie likes Mp4 with AAC audio codec. Mp3 audio sometimes causes issues. Try detaching the audio portion and see if the video alone runs and exports O.K. Also, try importing the clips to your desktop first, and then from there import into iMovie. See if that makes a difference.

You said that the movies play fine in all types of players. Try opening the first clip in Quicktime Player, exporting it, and dragging the exported movie into the timeline of an iMovie project. Does it play O.K. there? If so, do the same procedure with all of the other clips.

Assuming the clips play O.K. in Quicktime Player, as a workaround try opening the first clip in QT and then adding the other clips by clicking on Edit/Add Clip to End. You can trim the clips in Quicktime. Then export out to your desktop. At least you will have some semblance of a movie of your vacation.

Hi,

As you suspect, the frame rate probably is causing the choppiness. You are kind of in no-man's land with

47.95 fps. When you export it you likely will get a 25 fps movie with iMovie anyway.

You can try creating a new project, putting a known 29.97 fps clip into it as the first clip added, then adding your 47.95 fps clip. You can then delete your first clip added. You will now have a 29.97 fps project. Play your 47.95 fps clip and see if it still is choppy, and try sharing it.

If still choppy, try reducing the speed of the clip using the speed adjustment feature. Select the clip and then click on the button that looks like a clock face in the toolbar at the upper right of your screen, and make the adjustment in the little box that appears. See if that helps.
