MacOS High Sierra 10.13.2 causing Finder crash

Since updating to MacOS High Sierra 10.13.2 (from 10.13.1), I cannot connect to my NAS unit or other computers on the network, and in attempting to do so, Finder crashes and will not relaunch. I cannot find a fix to this problem, and as a consequence, my MacBook Pro (with TouchPad 2016) has become an island. I share files between computers on the network as part of my work process so this is a pretty big issue.

The problem seems to stem from defaulting the connection to SMB version 3, which is somehow broken. Changing the connection string to CIFS:// reverts to the much slower SMB version 1. The solution to maintain relatively speedy connections and avoid the bug is to set the default connection to SMB version 2, instead. This will also maintain compatibility with Windows servers where SMB1 is disabled.

This answer from the JAMF forums seems to do the trick. Enter these two lines in the terminal. You will be asked for your admin password:

sudo echo "[default]" >> /etc/nsmb.conf sudo echo "protocol_vers_map=2" >> /etc/nsmb.conf

I've been using CIFS instead for the past few weeks and it definitely ISN'T a solution to this.

Our team still get frequent crashes when trying to move files and folders when running the latest release of MacOS 10.13.2.

In the meantime I have now decided to work only locally and not use our server until a job is packaged and finished – This isn't ideal for our business and when working in teams.

We have older Macs running older versions of software (not completely secure!) and they don't have this problem so I really hope Apple comes up with a solution for this!

The Finder crash issue is not a performance issue with SMB, so these tips aren't relevant here. They do, however, help a good bit on a healthy SMB connection. I and others on the JAMF forum have tried these and other tips from Apple on tuning SMB connections, and none have come to fix the hard crash when copying, moving or renaming files on an SMB3 share under 10.13.2

Same issue here connecting to another iMac with high Sierra via SMB, I've also a NAS but usually I work on files stored on iMac on the office network,

Do you installed High Sierra with APFS file system? I think the problem is there. I've also problem with TAGS, when I tag files or folder on the network the Tag disappears but I can see assigned tag on the iMac.

I echo the replies within and will add. New MacBook Pro and loaded up VPN and MS Office. Used SMP volume and a clean download as I have duplicated the scenarios multiple times following fresh installs in 3 machines now (described below).

Turn on VPN and try to access internal folders, results in Finder crashes, Dock Bar freezes and weird functionality. Also piles up other programs and by validation, does not seem to have any tie to MS Office (simply because I can duplicate this after a fresh install at the Genius Bar using their install & before MS Office is installed).

Once I was certain of a possible issue and after blowing the system out and reinstalling fresh 2 times (MBP 1 week old at that point), the continued crashes and Kernal Panics continued. Initially it seemed like a Flash or Ram hardware issue. After 4 days in and lengthy calls with 3 different Sr Advisors on Apple Tech Support, they were bamboozled and 2 of the 3 were confident it was a software related issue.

My frustration and incredible loss of work productivity drove me into the Genius Bar on Jan 4, 2018. After 3 hours of testing, all hardware showing OK, I was able to show them the weird hang-ups I was having. They re-installed their software. During this, I loaded my settings and VPN login into their MBP and was unable to duplicate problem. I tested my hotspot instead of their store WIFI, still fine.

Once I loaded up their new load of 10.13.2, I setup and turned on VPN. I was able to KP the machine immediately,

Leader at the store was involved in this last re-pave of the IOS. They both agreed that it was a Ram issue which resulted in a new MBP.

The new machine was not in stock so received a day later. Setup as normal, turned off encryption and loaded VPN. Did not load any other software. I was able to make it KP as soon as I clicked through 4 folders on my server. Brand new machine out of box ~12 minutes.

Need help ASAP. Digging in all areas I can as this MBP was the 2nd in our company. The secret plan is to convert our company but this situation, it won't be long before I asked to go back to Surface. And that is death as you know...

I have been having the same problems and it is driving me crazy! I don’t know if this is also happening to you but when Finder crashes during a network drive file transfer, I’ll Force Quit Finder and Finder will refuse to re-open.

In regards to what andy72 was saying, cycling through safeboot has not yeilded any success for me although I will try connecting through cifs. It is also worth mentioning that I am connecting to another Macintosh through both smb and afp. I have a sneaking suspicion this bug lies on apfs.

I’ll be reaching out to Apple support today and will update you all on what they have to say.

With the latest update last week, 10.13.4 BETA, I am having the same issues as C4$$ noted. On the server side of the network things worked fine, except when disconnecting/sleep and returning the next day to the office. System would operate very slow. Happened for a couple days and simply did a restart to fix. (could be my own error but wanted to share)

Now I am outside the network for the first time since the last update a week ago and using VPN, then accessing SMB volumes to pull files - causes KP crashes. This is very similar to what was occurring on 10.13.2, so it concerns that maybe the last update caused the issues to come back? Unless my network is causing this, which could be possible. Just seems to be a similar reaction as before and is painful.

I have also still have been having these issues in macOS 10.13.3. Before in 10.13.2 Finder would crash when transferring files to a network drive. Now in 10.13.3 Finder will become completely unstable when moving files over a network but when the job finishes the system will resume. Finder also crashes when moving large files to an external drive. In most cases after this had happened a few times, the system will become unstable and must be rebooted via the power button. Trying to relaunch Finder via Terminal also has not proven to be successful. I’m really hoping this gets resolved in a near-future software update.
