Audiobooks appear duplicated in iTunes after update

Since updating to 12.7.2.58 two days ago, the majority of my Audiobooks appear as duplicated in iTunes. The files themselves don't appear to be duplicated, but when going to listen to Audiobooks within the iTunes desktop app, there are 3-4 duplicates of each book showing.

Here's what worked for me:

User uploaded file

  1. select [Audiobooks]
  2. View → Show View Options →
    1. View As: List
    2. Sort by: Album

It's not the same problem as Mr Hamilton is having, but it is also some kind of Grid View error. Multiple duplicates of the same books. Here is an example, with one of them open at the bottom. As you can see French I, II, and II are each of them duplicated multiple times. This does not happen in List View.

Note I have tried viewing by Title or by Author, and the problem does not go away. When viewing by Title it does not sort correctly by Title.

The issue only affects the main Audiobooks and Authors > All Authors views. In the first view sort by Author and then Author again, in the Authors view select an author, or use a smart playlist that matches all audiobooks, and you should get a more sensible listing of your content. If you don't want to wait on a fix from Apple see Organizing audiobook chapters for a scripting workaround.

Note: I did try deleting all of the audiobooks (after saving the folders of the data itself, directly from my iTunes library in the finder). I then reimported all that audio data to iTunes, and converted them into Audiobooks as I normally do. Even these fresh imports then duplicated themselves, yet again, in the iTunes interface.

Thanks for your replies. I appreciate it. I did try correcting any stray errors in those fields - there were a couple, but none in the French example I gave. In any event it did not resolve the issue. Furthermore, I've used Grid View for years, the same way, and the change occurred after updating to the latest iTunes, despite making no changes to metadata in the collection. Which tells me this is a bug in the latest software.

My workaround, which isn't the end of the world, is to abandon Grid View in iTunes Audiobooks, but Apple should be informed about this.

Thank you so much for your reply. I don't quite understand what you suggest me to do. If you wish I follow your advice please post a step-by-step guide, thanks. Otherwise I will just leave it as is and wait for Apple to post a fix which I'm sure will come at some point. It only affects my Louis CK collection of audiobooks and I can survive that. It would be worse if the entire library was duplicated-

Thanks again!

Just found out today... What a mess that met me entering my audiobook section of iTunes... Was sitting by the computer working and being a bit bored. I thought of listening to one of my audiobooks while doing some trivial editing. My library consisting of a couple of hundred titles totally messed up.... What a waste of work was my first thought. Then I found out others had same problem. Phew... I really hope there will be a new update of iTunes soon that makes everything back to normal.

Despite that iTunes is a great and really underestimated tool.

How do you fix this? I have spent multiple hours trying to get it fixed. There should have been a warning on this update as in we will mess up your audiobooks without providing a solution or instructions on how to fix. I was advise by Apple reps that I need the latest iTunes to get full use of pairing with my computer. All its done is make it so I can't sync my audiobooks which is a downgrade from my iPhone 6 instead of an upgrade to the X. To me, Its a $1000 POS without that function. On a side note, I am happy Apple is finally getting sued for programmed obsolescence especially since I told Apple and Apple retail that they would eventually get sued for it even however I did not have the time to deal with it.
