How can I hide or dim old events in iCal?

I use the Calendar app (version 9.0, 2155.15) on my mac and it syncs multiple calendar accounts with my phone and in google calendars. I want to find a way to hide or dim old events in my calendar when viewing them on my mac. I do want to be able to look at old events but I want to be able to look at my calendar and quickly be able to focus on present and future events. I've been deleting my old calendar events to accomplish this, but have found it inconvenient when I want to look back at an old event and I also do not want my colleagues to get an email notification that I am declining events I am invited to when I delete them after they occur. Please let me know if there is a way to do this.
