I get a false low battery shutdown shortly after boot up

When I boot up my MacBook pro in the morning, the battery indicator shows, for example, 73% charge. I start using it and then the screen goes black. I push the power button to cycle it (several tries), and a low battery graphic comes up on a black screen--outline of a battery with a red bar at the bottom indicating low battery. I plug in the power supply and power up and everything is ok until next morning.

(Can't edit the post so replying). Wondering if cold temperature could be the culprit. Cold contracts -- could this cause the battery contact to separate? But the initial boot-up is fine. I am able to log on, open a browser and get content via wi-fi before the black screen. Seems to be operating fine for a few minutes before shut down.
