Delete multiple messages. In the message list, select one or more messages or conversations, then click the Delete button in the Mail toolbar or press the Delete key. Search for a set of messages to delete. Delete a mailbox, which deletes all the messages it contains.

You can select multiples of individual emails with the command-key, but if you attempt to whack them all at once, be prepared for the spinning beach ball. Set an achievable, daily goal to remove a block of messages (e.g. 1000 messages per day). That example would be 20 repetitions of 50 messages. You decide how many you can remove at a time before Mail goes off into the weeds.
You may want to use Mail filters to automatically trash spam, and personal discipline to daily clean up non-essential emails. That way, you won't have to go through this again.
