I have gone 100% IOS, IPhone Six Plus and IPad Pro, (MacBook Pro died). How can I back up my ICloud content to a attached external hard drive to either the IPhone or IPad? If directly attaching by a dongle will not work, what will? I REALLY like the idea of having my data in my hands in addition to in the cloud. Thanks for any advice! Ricky 😎

I have one, but don't use it as a backup - I use it wirelessly with my iPad Pro and plug it into my Mac to transfer files. So, I do not know if these would be as reliable as a good quality hard drive. But it is very handy.
Using a computer running the latest version of iTunes and a USB cable or wifi and iCloud, or wifi and iTunes.

If you have wifi, you have an option.
There is no ability to back up to a hard drive directly.
