Watch 3 no texts on cell

I have watch 3 with cell service. I am not getting text messages or being able to send one when I am away from my phone. This is one reason of getting this. My phone is on. I am connected to iMessage. I turned it on and off. I turned sms on. Nothing. Till I get on range of my phone then I get messages. Is is upto date with 4.2

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that unless your iPhone is nearby, you're unable to send or receive messages on your Apple Watch 3. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved so far. I'm happy to help.
