Apps taking up 493 GBs?!

I have a 2013 Macbook Pro 13-inch, running OS X 10.11.6. I've had very few problems with this computer, but this here concerns me. The applications folder is about 16 gigabytes, and yet when I check the storage, it says that apps take up almost 500! I know for a fact that I do not have 500 GB worth of apps. I tried rebuilding the Spotlight index, which did absolutely nothing. I restarted the computer, I emptied trash. I don't know what else to do.

Check out what your storage looks like in safe mode: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Booting to safe mode clears some caches and stuff so that by itself might fix it.

I already tried rebuilding the spotlight index. It did absolutely nothing.

It is not the ‘other’ data, it’s apps.

I would download a program called Disk Inventory X. It will break down the hard drive into a visual representation and will show you exactly where your space is being allocated.
