Has anyone found an extension cable that works with the multiport display adapter on a 2017 15" MacBook Pro?

I am not certain you can use an extension cable on the computer-end. That commits the USB-C port on the computer to a specific purpose, and may make it impossible for the MultiPort display adapter to work.
Can you not just use a longer display cable on the display side?
Now I have 3 cables draped across my desk to the laptop, an HDMI, USB and the charging cable. It would be nice if the pigtail on the adapter was a little longer so only one cable has to be laying across my desk. A 3 foot extension would be great.
