Lately I cannot receive a lot of emoji's - they arrive as a black box with a question mark. Some Googling has advised that this is because friends are on a later software version and I need to upgrade. However I am already on v11.2???

Are these iMessages that don't come through? Or SMS from friends that have Android phones? If it's the former, you should connect your phone to iTunes, put it in recovery mode and choose update, not restore and test it again. If it's the latter, then you should contact your carrier.
