Airplay on apple tv

Airplay is not working right for me or there is a setting I'm missing. When I start a movie on my iPad or iPhone and I click the airplay icon it lets me choose between the device itself and the apple tv, however it only is for sound, no video.... Why? This is the same on the iPad and iPhone. When I click on a picture I don't even get a airplay option at all. This is the same on both devices. I don't see any setting for this either.

Hi. Which iOS version are you using?

You can enable AirPlay mirroring in Control Center.

In iOS 11, you can enable basic AirPlay from the music controls in Control Center. Tap/hold to make them large.

Some apps, like Netflix, block AirPlay of downloaded content. And some apps block all AirPlay.

Try AirPlaying something generic, like Vimeo. If that works, then your problems are with the other apps.
