7.7.9 Firmware update reduced range of Airport Extreme

I have a Airport Extreme base (tall).

I did an update to the latest firmware (Dec 14th 2017) as the device was flashing with a amber signal light.

Current version reads 7.7.9.

My bedroom (2nd floor) has a Amazon Fire Stick set up on my TV, which I have had for years (updating the fire sticks periodically) which was getting the wireless signal (5ghz) as very good.

After the firmware update of the AE, the 5ghz network was "out of range" and I am not able to access it anymore. I still have access to 2.4ghz network but it confuses me why all of a sudden after an update the range has been reduced and the Fire Stick can't even see the 5ghz network .

I have always used 5ghz in my bedroom as I would stream UHD movies on a 150mb internet connection.

Anything I can do to fix the range.

Same issue for me. What’s more: I updated to 7.7.9 and my speeds dropped from 60-70Mbps down and 10Mbps up to 1-2Mbps down and about the same up. I thought maybe it was my provider, so I rebooted modem and router - no change. I downgraded to 7.7.8 and performance went right back up. I did this twice to be sure - once from my iPhone and once from my MBP. Each time I updated to 7.7.9, performance dropped to nothing. Each time I reverted back to .8, performance came back. It’s not the modem or the provider - it’s something with the 7.7.9 update.

any updates for this issue?

Not from Apple, if that is what you are asking.

But my airport extreme is constantly flashing that amber light prompting me to update.

This is normal. If you don't want to be pestered to update by the slow, blinking amber light......open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Utility menu, select Preferences, and uncheck all of the boxes.

I was getting the same update failure error while I was trying to update from my MBP and Airport utility.

Update (7.7.9 or earlier downgrades) installed without an error when using the Airport Utility on my iPhone. I don't know enough about it to tell you what the difference is but I saw in another discussion people were suggesting that.

Regardless of error free update 7.7.9 does not work for my AE.
