Since you haven't seen it in the hundreds of posts explaining it or Apple's tech note on it (Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Center with iOS 11 - Apple Support), I will. The Control Center buttons were repurposed to disconnect from the current network, but leave Wi-Fi on. This has several benefits:

  • If doesn't prevent you from turning off Wi-Fi if you really want to
  • Wi-Fi greatly improves the accuracy of location services
  • If a different network appears it will still connect to it
  • There's no chance of forgetting Wi-Fi is off, so you won't inadvertently leave it off and run up a large cellular data bill
  • There is really no reason to ever turn Wi-Fi off, except to disconnect from the current network.

I use it for that last one very frequently, and I've found this new way of managing Wi-Fi to be very useful. And I never turn off Wi-Fi for any other reason.

As there were 4 ways to turn off Wi-Fi previously, this was a good use of the button on the Control Center, as it leaves 3 other ways to turn off Wi-Fi. If you use any of them Wi-Fi will turn off and stay off. Yes, it really will. I've seen a few claims that it doesn't, but I have not been able to reproduce it on any of my 3 iOS devices, so either people are mistaken or their phones are very broken.

Previously I could choose to turn off WiFi and it would stay off until I chose to switch it back on. That is no longer the case.

WRONG. If you turn off Wi-Fi it stays off. I've tried it with 3 iOS devices, and if I turn off Wi-Fi in Settings it stays off. Dead off. I left it off for a week once, just to make sure. It was still off a week later, when I turned it back on. I have also done a test where I turned Wi-Fi off, then turned on Airplane mode. When I turned off Airplane mode Wi-Fi was still off.

I'm also missing the previous iOS 10 functionality of control center turning off BT

Why are you unable and/or unwilling to use Settings/Bluetooth?

I am not personally aware of any "Bluejacking" incident taking place anywhere in the world with any smartphone whatever. Do you have any provable statistics?

But to say that there is no reason to turn off BT or Wifi is a matter of opinion

No. That's FACT. There is no reason to turn off Bluetooth or Wifi EVER.

As you explain it, it is very simple. The problem is that Apple will switch it back on again at their discretion. Perhaps next day? As you appear to have some inside knowledge on this, can you please explain to those of us who remain confused how we can switch off WiFi and then LEAVE it switched off until WE decide to switch it back on? Many thanks.

This has been explained over and over and over in this thread. Your assertion Apple with just turn it on again at their discretion is patently wrong.

To turn off Wifi or Bluetooth and to not have them come on again unless you want them come on again, you don't turn them off in Control Center.

You go to Settings > Wifi or Settings > Bluetooth and turn them off there.

OR

You simply say "Hey Siri, Turn Wifi off" or "Hey Siri, Turn Bluetooth off.

Why this is so difficult to understand is a complete mystery.

Guys, guys, guys - I'm not deaf and I'm not stupid. I've been an Apple developer since 1981. My iPhone X running iOS 11.2.2 is on a free data plan and for development and other reasons I try to keep it off the house wifi. I go to settings and switch off wifi. At night I put my phone in airplane mode. Next day I invariably notice that I am once again connected to the house wifi. I have tried 'forgetting' the house wifi but Apple have very considerately decided that I want my wifi details updated from the other iPads and phones I need and use for development.

Why, if you've turned Wifi off, do you also put your phone in Airplane mode? It is possible when you take a phone off Airplane mode Wifi turns back on and that may be by design. Turn off Wifi in settings then NOT putting your phone on Airplane mode and report back whether Wifi's back on the next morning. If it is, you have a defective phone and you should make an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar.

You're a developer and you wrote this blatantly wrong information?

Why not use Do Not Disturb?

Exactly. Turn off Wifi if he must, then to avoid being disturbed by calls and texts, Do Not Disturb was designed for this very need. Airplane mode was designed for flying in airplanes.

I know people used to use Airplane mode to avoid being disturbed but how long has Do Not Disturb been a feature?

TBH, I didn't know how long, but google being my friend, I found it was introduced in 2012 with iOS 6. I would imagine, 6 years and 5 major iOS iterations should be enough for some people to learn how to use it.

First you are simply wrong. You can still completely turn off Wifi and Bluetooth, JUST NOT FROM CONTROL CENTER. And it has actually, been explained over and over and over. First, control center is not the same thing as settings. Apple is making them separate places. Second, Apple made the change to accommodate the millions and millions of people who have a need to toggle off Wifi or Bluetooth, but don't want to turn off either permanently. People with Apple Watches for example. Or people with HomeKit enabled devices as another example. Until Apple made this change, people really only had the option to completely shut Wifi or Bluetooth off - from two places, Control Center adn Settings. In other words a totally redundant control. And the problem with that was they were missing functionality or using cellular data because they may not have remembered they turned it off. So the change didn't remove functionality in any way shape or form. It actually increased functionality because it helps people as I suggested and for those of you who want to turn it off, you STILL CAN DO SO. Just in a different location. If that doesn't make sense other than the fact you may not like the change, I can't make it any more clear.

Why? It's not as if the radios make noise. Do Not Disturb doesn't silence your alarm.

No-one has explained why Apple have made this change and no-one has suggested an advantage.

Probably because lots of people asked for it. Before this change was implemented, if I wanted to disconnect from a network because, perhaps it was slow or restricted in some way, I had to either turn WiFi off (bad as it's used by location services) or, go into settings and forget the network. In the former case, I would need to remember to turn WiFi back on when I get home and tried to turn on the lights or the television. With the latter, I would have to log back into the WiFi network the next time I wanted to use it. Either of those are far more inconvenient than having to turn WiFi off by going to settings.

The WiFi network at my office uses a captive portal which means it's annoying to have to log into. And, while it's useful for checking email or the occasional web browsing, it doesn't work well for downloading apps. I also don't feel comfortable using it to stream music as it is shared by a lot of people. So, I often want to disconnect from that network. But, I don't want to have to log into it every day.
