Mac messages won't delete

Updated to High Sierra. Now mac messages won't delete. I click the X. Nothing happens. Not email messages. When I search for this most answers are mail related. Thanks.

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm not sure why but they just started deleting. I swiped like the article said and after that worked the X delete worked as well. Thanks!
