BT router keeps dropping wifi on MB Pro

Long standing problem, hope someone can help: I have a 2016 Mac Air and a late 2016 MBP. The wifi signal keeps dropping and searching for a connection. Ive tried troubleshooting by renewing the DHCP lease. The only thing that seems to work (sometimes) is by turning wifi on the Mac 'off-and-on again'. I don't have this problem anywhere else, such as coffee shops or using my iPhone to establish a hotspot. Its beyond annoying.

Is it my ADSL filter? Is it my BT router? Do I need to set a manual IP up to resolve it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (please don't make me call BT again! 😕).

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, 2 TBT3), iOS 11.2.1, null

The general solution to such problems is "It's your complete Wi-Fi environment"..

Unless you live in a tent (no attenuation of signals) far from any neighbors (no other competing Wi-Fi traffic) any analysis should be done based on what you actually "see" on the airwaves around you.

hold down the option key while you click on the Wi-Fi icon on the menubar, and you get a report like this one:

post a screenshot or answer these questions:

what is PHY mode and channel?

what RSSI? and at what approximate distance from your Router?

what is transmit Rte and MCS index?

how many networks are showing?

Hello Steve,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you are having an issue with dropping your Wi-Fi connection dropping with your BT router. You also indicate that your MacBook Pro does not have the same issues with other Wi-Fi routers.

You can start with the following support article to troubleshoot your Wi-Fi connection:

How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity

I understand your reluctance to contact BT again, but if you are not having connection issues with other networks, then it would appear isolated to the BT router and they would have to be the ones to contact.

Best regards.

Hi Alex, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my query in regards to wifi troubleshooting. Ive checked all of the accepted default settings for connecting my Apple devices to the BT router, I have also looked at manually configuring the router as a network admin, but I seemingly can't change some of the settings on the router. I think I will ask BT to send me new hardware, hopefully that will fix the issue.

Thanks again & Merry Christmas!

Steve
