Some Contacts grayed out and can't send Imessage even to other Iphone users

After the last update a lot of my contacts are grayed out and can't send text or imessage to other iphone users.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.1

I see that after the last update, a lot of your contacts are grayed out and you can't send messages to other iPhone users. I'll be happy to help assist you with this.

For the contacts being grayed out, I would like to gather some more information. Are these iCloud or third-party contacts? Please let me know.

Thanks for letting us know. I have something for you to try.

Third-party contacts are contacts that use a third-party service (Google, Yahoo, etc.). Since you mention that this is an issue with iCloud Contacts, please try the steps in this support article:
Get help using iCloud Contacts, Calendars, or Reminders.

I should mention that once I receive a text from a frayed out contact it turns green/blue after

Thanks for the help but it didn’t work. It’s not all of my contacts it’s just random ones. I tried to restore contacts from iCloud with no luck. My iPhone X experience so far has been frustrating to say the least
