Can I Create an Automation for Turning My Plug-ins On or Off?

I'm just getting into using plugins, but unfortunately I've found that I must either turn each plugin on or off for the entirety of a given track, and cannot have the plug-in on at certain points in the song and off for others unless I manually do it. This really limits my options for making dynamic and layered electronic music. Is there any way for me to automate a plugin so that it turns on at specific times only? Thanks

GarageBand 10, iOS 10.1

GB does offer track automation (press the 'a' key), however whether or not that will do what you need depends on the effect.

some have an actual on/off parameter, which would work. something like the Delay Designer has a Wet parameter which may work pushing the effect in and pulling it. other effects just have parameters for all the settings which is kind of a pain to adjust (all of them at each change point).

what we prefer to do is use a separate track, it can make life a ton easier.

lets say you have a long guitar track, and in measures 5-6 you want to push it through a phaser. what you can do is create a duplicate of the guitar track, add in the phaser, and then split the original region at measure 5 and 7 (leaving 5-6 separate from the rest), and then drag that new region into the duplicate/effected track
