Photo's when enlarged become an exclamation mark in a triangle

Hi, I've been taking photos with my Nikon D5600 and shooting in RAW. When i go to import them into 'Photos' on my MacBook Air, the photos import fine. The thumbnail of each photo looks how it should, its when you go to open the photo or enlarge it, that the image then become an exclamation mark. If someone could help. It would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I have tried restoring 'Photos' with 'command + Option'. No luck.

MacBook Air, iOS 10.3.3, Operating System is 10.11.6.

Are you syncing the Photos with iCloud and do you have Optimization selected in Photos/Preferences/iCloud? If you click on the photo, will it download from iCloud, if applicable?

You don't need to use iCloud and if you aren't using iCloud, the Optimization isn't applicable.

It appears the import isn't importing the full resolution photo. As a test, try using Image Capture to extract the photos, then import them into Photos.

Hi there, have you checked first where the download from the Nikon onto the Mac was going? It downloads and transfer onto normal location/folder?

Maybe make a copy of the transfered pictures for a test and then try to import -

It is just an idea you might have tryed already.

Hi Eric,

I'm not using iCloud. Should i be? I'm just transferring the photos from an SD card onto the Photos application. And tbh I don't if I have Optimization selected. Might need a run through on how to check that.

Hi, I don't really understand what you're saying. All that my Nikon camera does is take the picture. Once that part is done, I simply pull out the SD card and slot it into my MacBook air. Then click on 'import new photos' to the Photos Application. The thumbnail of each photo looks how it should. But when i go to enlarge them, they become an exclamation mark inside a triangle.
