If you have an Office 365 subscription, you activate by putting in your Microsoft ID (nothing to do with Apple). For problems with MS products, it is best to use their own forums, e.g.

It's not asking for your Apple ID. As Csound1 noted, it wants your MS account info. It first asks for your account name, then your password.

It's the same account/password you would use here:

I'm assuming either an Office 365 subscription, or Office 2016. For Office 2011 or 2008, you simply enter the Product Key in the software package.

I have no idea why it's doing that. MS Office and Apple have nothing to do with each other. Well, other than it looks like the new Mac is waiting for you to purchase Office 365 since it doesn't yet recognize it as being activated.

Basic instructions for logging in to Office 365 from an MS page:

How do I log into my Office 365 subscription account?

Here's how you go about getting the apps:

  1. Navigate to Office.com in your browser.
  2. Click on "My account" and sign in with the Microsoft account your Office 365 subscription is attached to.
  3. Click "Install"

I think you're right. When I first got Word for Mac I think it was free. Since then, and since I got the new iMac, it now requires a subscription to Office 365 that I need to purchase. I still don't know why it comes up with the pop-up requesting my Apple IDs, or why it rejects them when I enter them, but it becomes irrelevant if I go to Microsoft's Office 365 website.

Thanks for your help.

As noted by Csound1, Office, or any of its individual apps, have never been free. I can only guess the previous Mac was:

1) Purchased used and the seller illegally left a copy of Office on it.

2) Someone you know illegally installed a copy of their legal product on your Mac.

3) Years ago, you could include a discounted copy of Office to your new Mac purchase. But it would still come with its own Product Key for future reinstallation and activation.

Thank you. I used to use Word for Mac on my MacBook Pro, but have since switched to a new iMac. Ever since the switch I have been required to "Activate" an Office 365 subscription (in other words, pay money). Every time I try, I am required to enter my Apple ID and Apple password. They are rejected every time although they are up to date and work for everything else. There is just no getting around it. But thanks for clarifying my question.
