Folder icon aspect ratio

In High Sierra: the image I want to assign to a folder icon now gets re-sized to a square icon. This is not what it used to be. I used to be able to have any aspect ration on the picture I assign fo a folder icon and the icon kept that aspect ratio. Is this a new "feature"? How can I get back the full flexibility?
