iMovie Video Overlay Glitch

On iMovie, for some reason, I have a video overlay that I never inserted, which is invisible and I can’t select it to remove it. It appears as 40 minutes of empty space, and when I play the iMovie, the sound of the overlay is reflected onto the actual film. I don’t want this and it is ruining my movie. Please help. Also, my phone won’t allow me to attach screenshots so I can’t show you. :(

If deleting preferences per Jim's suggestion doesn't solve it, try transferring your project's media to a newly created project. To do this, open your current project and do an Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, and then create a new project and and do an Edit/Paste in the new project. That will copy your current project's media, including all editing, to the newly created project. See if you still get the phantom audio in the new project.

This is very strange indeed. If I understand correctly when you play your project there is a 40 minute period where you hear audio that is not from your video clips but there is no audio or video clip visible other than your movie clips. Try opening iMovie holding down the command and option keys and choose to delete preferences. reopen iMovie and your library and see if the problem persists. This will not affect your project or media and often fixes iMovie strange behavior.
