If deleting preferences per Jim's suggestion doesn't solve it, try transferring your project's media to a newly created project. To do this, open your current project and do an Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, and then create a new project and and do an Edit/Paste in the new project. That will copy your current project's media, including all editing, to the newly created project. See if you still get the phantom audio in the new project.

Are you referring to iMovie for iOS or iMovie for Mac? If for iOS iMovie please post in that discussion. This thread is for iMovie for Mac.

What do you mean by opening iMovie? The app itself, the project, or something else? Sorry for my confusion, I’m pretty new with this stuff.
This is very strange indeed. If I understand correctly when you play your project there is a 40 minute period where you hear audio that is not from your video clips but there is no audio or video clip visible other than your movie clips. Try opening iMovie holding down the command and option keys and choose to delete preferences. reopen iMovie and your library and see if the problem persists. This will not affect your project or media and often fixes iMovie strange behavior.
