the punctuation keys on my iPad apple keyboard do not correspond with the symbol printed on the key.

Hi. Is the for the built-in iOS software keyboard, or for an external hardware keyboard?
If it's a hardware keyboard, check the keyboard layout setting in Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard. You only see the Hardware Keyboard settings when the keyboard is connected.
