Carplay problems with Chevrolet and iPhone6

I have a new Chevrolet Equinox (2018), this is my first car with Carplay. The problem I am having is with connectivity issues. I am experiencing the following problems:

When Carplay is connected, I select the phone app to make a call. The phone app shows up on the screen, however when I make the call, the audio is on the "iPhone" and not the car speaker system. There does not seem to be a way to manually transfer this to the Carplay.

When Receiving a call, with the car radio playing and Carplay going, the call will not take over from the radio. Even answering the call, the radio continues to play and the call audio is not on the iPhone.

Also, Siri does not work properly. When I am using the music app, and ask Siri to play a song on my phone, the response is that I do not have a cellular connection. I have the music downloaded to the phone, it should not need a cellular connection. The music plays fine when I manually select it on the phone, however the music browsing is limited on the Carplay interface.

I have the latest update for the iPhone and the Carplay, and have tried a number of cables including the original iPhone cable.

Nothing seems to work. Is this arrangement broken? or just not ready for public use?

Any ideas how I could fix this?

Hello JGreg7,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are having some issues with using CarPlay with your iPhone and your Chevy Equinox, even after trying some good troubleshooting steps. To help with your issues, please make sure you have followed these steps, and then contact Apple for further help with your situation.

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

I went through the list:

- Siri is turned on, but still cannot find my music located on the iPhone, or contacts if trying to call someone. The Carplay also limits access to contacts when the car is in motion. Even the passenger cannot scroll through the contacts list - only favorites.

- Siri does not respond accurately when the car is driving, she does not seem to understand even simple commands, however she does seem to work better if parked.

- Phone is updated to the latest IOS and has been restarted several times (soft reset),

- I have used multiple cables, OEM apple cables and aftermarket certified cables, there appears to be no difference,

- The car manual offers no help with diagnostics, just a general introduction of how it should work.

I have noticed a few things through experimenting:

- The phone and music seem to work normally when using only the Chevrolet radio and phone interface over Bluetooth (no Carplay, no cable connection).

- Carplay seems to respond better when the phone is connected and Bluetooth is turned off.

- I have been able to get the iPhone to work on Carplay, by selection the "iPod" on the Chevrolet radio. This seems to transfer the control to the iPhone, which then will respond correctly with the phone calls.

In all of this, there seems to be no "plug and play" option without changing a bunch of settings in the phone. It does not seem that this is the way it should work.
