Why does Final Cut pro and iMovie no longer support mini DV tape camcorders. Until recently I could import video from my DV tape camcorder without any problems, but since the latest updates I cannot import anything via iMovie and Final Cut will import some clips and not others?

Thanks for the instructions, managed to record via the QT player. I tried changing the camera settings from 50i to 25p and found that I can import via iMovie in that setting. Seems that interlaced recording is not supported but progressive is?
I have a similar issue, though the media does import, FCPX will stutter before playing it and will not do a background render.
Once my backup drive is in a new housing I'll be reverting back to 10.3.4 and an earlier version of iMovie on both Macs.
If I import the video directly into FCPX (which is erratic anyway, importing some clips and not others) then the background render does not work as you describe. If I record the video via the QuickTime Player first then import the saved video into FCPX the background render does work correctly.
Importing video by the Quick Time Player has now stopped working as well, seems Apple are determined to render tape based camcorders obsolete. Can anybody recommend any third party software that can import video from miniDV tape based camcorders?
Have just tested HDV and DV tape importing it High Sierra using FCP X 10.4.
Import worked OK.
Machine control is per normal for FCP X.
Also burned DVDs for both HDV & DV. Result OK.
Usually we have seen DVD burning to be problematic in times past after upgrades.
This one seems fine regarding tape importing & DVD burning. 🙂
Note: Clean install of High Sierra and FCP X.

Maybe try resetting your FCP X Preferences.
Hold Option-Command-Command as FCP X launches.
Interlaced tape capture works fine and FCP X has the presets for interlaced footage as well.
FCP X has not made tape capture obsolete, there is an issue on your specific Mac that is preventing capture.
Do you have an app called Perian on your Mac, or a codec named A52? Maybe an antivirus app??
These are potential road blocks.

Alchroma, tape import may not be obsolete but this IS an issue, I have it too and deleting preferences does nothing to help. The only thing that fixes it is reverting back to 10.3.4 or iMovie 10.1.6 or earlier This issue first cropped up with iMovie 10.1.7 and still remains with 10.1.8 and also in FCPX 10.4.
Symptoms include:
Failure to render video when imported into a 1080p project
Delay in starting playback which gets progressively worse as more interlaced video is used on the timeline
Failure to run ANY process on the video, e.g. stabilisation, optical flow, frame blending, some transitions or effects when applied to 1080i clips.
None of these are an issue in FCPX 10.3.4 or iMovie 10.1.6 or earlier
Try using the QuickTime Player.
Connect the camera. Open the QT player. Select File>New Movie Recording.
Are your recordings progressive or interlaced? As far as I can tell the problem primarily effects interlaced recordings.

I will try that. Issue doesn’t only effect FCP X, interlaced footage will not import via iMovie or the Quick Time player either?
