congratulations apple user, $1000 amazon gift card popup

Every time I go to certain websites I either get this or some other scam. I highly doubt it’s legit even though it tries to convince you with Facebook posts of people who got theirs (which are probably fake as you can’t click on them) I’ve tried deleting my safari data and turning on pop up blocker to no avail. Anyone else get this?

What it seems to be doing is hijacking JavaScript.

I turned off JavaScript in Safari. In iOS, go to Settings, Safari, scroll to the bottom and select Advanced, then switch off the JavaScript button.

Not only did that make the phishing ad go away, it made all the "Subscribe" popups on news sites go away too.

I contacted Amazon about this problem and this is their response:

Hi Sue,

Thanks for taking the time to write us about this. Yes we have heard of this and from what I gather Apple is working on a fix. This is not from Amazon, it's a phishing attempt to gather information. We encourage customers to take the following precautionary measures:

-- Keep your browser and operating system up-to-date with any security updates needed
-- Use anti-virus and anti-malware software and keep it up-to-date
-- Be careful with website links (URLs) that come via e-mail, especially from people or companies you don't know
-- If you've recently installed a tool bar or plug-in for your browser, try disabling or uninstalling it
-- Clear your cache in your internet browsers

For more information on how to protect your system, see our Safety and Security Help pages:

We hope to see you again soon.

I’ve had the same problem, as have many others. Unfortunately, there isnt a lot of information online about this bogus popup. It’s not web-site specific, it has appeared for me on many different sites.

For me the only solution was to turn to a third-party content blocker. Support for third-party content blockers was a new feature Apple added to Safari beginning with iOS 9. I chose 1Blocker, which is available in the App Store, but there are other options available. By turning on 1Blocker’s options for blocking ads and trackers I was able to successfully eliminate the bogus pop up you’re describing. Note: I am in no way affiliated with 1Blocker or any software company.

I can appreciate that using third-party content blockers on your device adds some additional complexity to your system. There may be some web sites that are adversely affected by programs like 1Blocker. Fortunately, you can add sites you trust to the program’s “whitelist” feature, which effectively turns blocking off just for those trusted sites.

Despite the added complexity, Apple clearly recognized the value of content blockers when it added the ability to support them to iOS. I’ve been very happy browsing with 1Blocker.

Good luck and let me know if I can help.

It is at hijacking JavaScript, it’s placing up what is called a modal window which sits on top of everything else and places a gray transparent background over it to show you that you can’t click on anything below it and the only thing that allows you access to is the dialog box which is the white window that appears with the message about the gift card and then only gives you access to press OK

My wife has this message popping up on her iPad while playing a puzzle app. The app uses ads and after the ad finishes it opens Safari with this message not allowing her to finish her puzzle. After trying the suggestions here and even a content blocker, the pop ups continued. My solution for today was to disable Safari on the iPad. Settings -- General -- Restrictions -- disable Safari. The puzzle is almost finished now. Success!
